When it comes to mailing letters, many people do it by dropping their envelopes in the United States Postal Service's blue collection bins placed in neighborhoods across America. However, the USPS is now warning would-be mailers that those blue boxes might not be the safest option.
In a press release, the Postal Service explained that unfortunately, the collection bins have become very attractive to thieves looking to steal identities or checks, especially at specific times and on specific days. The agency stated, "The biggest variable enticing these criminals to steal are customers depositing mail into blue collection boxes after the last collection of the day or during Sundays and federal holidays."

"The US Postal Service has two investigative units: the USPS OIG and the USPIS12. The USPS OIG conducts independent audits and investigations of USPS programs and operations to determine whether they are efficient and cost-effective1. The USPIS is a federal law enforcement agency that investigates crimes involving the mail system, such as mail theft, robberies, assaults, mail fraud, and drug trafficking."
And like all other government agencies, they've failed, and likely wasted billions in tax dollars.
Residential boxes on the street are no longer safe either. Theifs will follow the carriers and steal what they just delivered.
“I read a little while back that they are telling people not to send checks anymore, even if you take them inside to mail. “
I’d say they just want us to go digital to make it easier to track us and support the elimination of cash.
Hi JERRY.
“The idea of anyone messing with ‘The Post Office’ was almost beyond the Pale”
bttt
I sent 2 certified return receipt mail, 3 days apart to the same address April 18,2023.
Maryland to Virginia. Both had 60 day lease notices, thank god I sent another FedEx overnight to fulfill the 60 day lease notice.
I reported missing to both shipping Post office (I used 2 different post Office). 4 in person attempts.
Filed paperwork, online had receipts.
To this day March 2004 11 months later both the CERTIFIED MAIL WITH RETURN RECEIPTS are still missing.
Post office said they don’t have enough info....
MORE THAN LIKELY IN HOUSE STOLEN.
Around Dayton, Ohio, there have been multiple instances of mail carriers being robbed of their keys. Some have been caught with mail they stole from boxes.
USPS has gone downhill in their service. I’m starting to believe that there really is NO SANTA CLAUSE!
They should install decoy boxes with vicious feral animals inside,an angry baboon, a bag of rats or something.
Thief opens the wrong box and gets a Wild Kingdom moment!
For a few years it has been unsafe to leave outgoing mail in my home mailbox or to us the outside USPS collection boxes. When we have outgoing mail we take it to the post office and walk it inside to deposit. All financial information now comes electronically instead of via USPS. Checks we have electronically deposit. The few periodicals we subscribe to are in digital form. Little comes to the house in the mail anymore except junk mail - ads, solicitations, and political garbage.
We live in a society where the rights of criminals, slackers, and the mentally deranged have precedence over the rights of citizens. When there are no standards in a society there is no respect for property or other people. When the justice system is corrupt, criminal behavior is rampant. When institutions collapse, so does civilization.
Good point. More hypocrisy.
I thought this same thing when I saw a recent anxious and hyper-ventilating article about "China and Russia hacking US elections."
But if that's really a threat, the solution is simple: ID voting, clean voter rolls, and paper ballot traceability.
We know that will never happen.
DUH! Who didn’t know that!
I take my mail inside to the drop box and hope for the best.
Fundamental Transformation of America.
Always think like a thief. Problem solved..almost.
Hoover also. Oneonta still has theirs out.
Blue USPS boxes would be the safest imaginable, against DEW attacks.
The mail that survived in Lahaina were in blue USPS boxes.
May take some time for idiots to realize that!
NO DROP BOXES! TRUE THE VOTE WORKED GREAT until they changed the program and I couldn’t use it.
It was fun and satisfying thinking I was doing the USA a big favor.
Deleting one job at a time.
I too remember back in the 1950s and '60s when they were green.
