The family that had wanted to build the world’s tallest flagpole in rural eastern Maine has agreed to pay a $250,000 penalty under a consent agreement following construction of more than 50 cabins without obtaining environmental permits from the state.
The Board of Environmental Protection signed off Wednesday on the consent agreement signed late last month by Morrill Worcester, patriarch of the family whose company owns the land.
The Flagpole View Cabins were built from 2019 to 2022 in sparsely populated Columbia Falls near the site where the family wanted to build a flagpole taller than the Empire State Building. The flagpole was to be a centerpiece of a billion-dollar development honoring veterans.
Under the consent agreement, the company must file an after-the-fact application by Friday for a permit for the work that was already completed.
An attorney for the Worcester family said the development was purposefully kept small to avoid the need for a special permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Developers obtained necessary local permits and caused no environmental damage, attorney Timothy Pease said.

I strongly believe there is much more to this story. A bunch of commies didn’t like a flag.
Every state requires a permit to build. Maine is no different.
So, lawfare?

All these rules are subject to daily/situational interpretation. EPA reinterpreted because why?
The cabins were built without any permits. And there were 50 of them. These people built a town.
Even in the back woods of Maine, there are rules. It had nothing to do with the flag.
Obviously they think they did the correct permits but were proved wrong.
So, what happened? Why did they abandon the project?
I was expecting to read the family was being fined because that giant flagpole fell down (due to construction or a windstorm) and damaged other folks homes.
Obviously they think they did the correct permits but were proved wrong.
Interpretations of regulations change DAILY. The law never changes but the interpretations do. It is a moving target.
Can you not see the liberals destroying all the past interpretations with new ones?
PROVED WRONG? you are willing to accept that because one person and believe me that it is one person, says so.
Who has the resources to fight this overreach?
You are currently guilty of something right now that they can destroy you and your life. They just haven’t decided what it is yet.
Free country? Privately OWNED land?
Fairy tales.
More like ignorance of the law is no excuse
They can claim to be a no-go religion of peace compound.
This
Probably true but $250,000 seems excessive, but it may have been a choice to pay $250,000 or a Kangaroo Court would order them to pay $5,000,000.
scratchin my head over that one and this whole thing.
Amazing that FR has a few tards who shoot from the lip about “no permits”....
