Cornyn launches bid to succeed McConnell as GOP leader

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) on Thursday officially announced a run to replace Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as Republican leader, setting up what is expected to be a hotly contested race for the top spot in the conference.

“I am asking my Republican colleagues to give me the opportunity to succeed Leader McConnell,” Cornyn said in a statement. “Throughout my time I’ve built a track record of listening to colleagues and seeking consensus, while leading the fight to stop bad policies that are harmful to our nation and the conservative cause.”

Cornyn pointed to his work in leadership as whip and atop the Senate GOP campaign arm, as well as his recent stretch outside of leadership.

The Texas Republican added that the Senate is “broken” and that he could play a “major role” in putting it back together.

I live in Texas; the only reason I would vote for Sen. Cronyn is because I can’t vote for any democrat. They will lie to you and then show in Washington and ask Schumer how to vote. To hell with their constituents and what they may want. “Chuck knows best!”
I wrote Sen. Cornyn’s office two years ago concerning a likely “straw purchase” attempt for a rifle I had advertised online. Buyer in south Florida, FFL lived 155 miles from buyer, money order sent from Philadelphia....go figure. ATF was no help, said background check would clear me of any responsibility. Yea, right!! Wrote Cornyn’s office and got a reply that looked like a preselected general reply that never mentioned my concerns or even gun control. But he will vote for more gun control when he can, but like all of them, enforcement isn’t important unless you are middle class, hardworking, taxpayer, and a few other conditions needed for prosecution. This guy as Senate Republican leader is just Mitch II!

It's way past time to eject these fossilized politicos.

mcconnell, in his need to appease the ccp, screwed USA citizens for decades.

The gomers of politicians will once again fail America by electing corrupt old timers.

Cornyn is less conservative than Cruz, but more popular among deeply conservative voters since he does absolutely nothing. Hence, as a do-nothing senator Cornyn never offends anybody.

He will almost certainly succeed McConnell. As sad as it is. We only have like 5 conservative senators. Cornyn has like a 40 seat advantage here. How can he lose?

McConnell wouldn’t resign unless the RINO establishment had the next leader approved and lined up already. It might or might not be Cornyn.

We lived in Texas when Cornyn ran for Rep, we were members of the same church. Against church regs he use the directory of members to solicit votes. Oh hell NO! He’s been a RINO and oportunist ever since.

Perhaps Cornyn thought picking a public fight with Paxton recently was going to make him more popular with the other GOP Senators.

John is the absolute wrong person for this.

He is also an incredibly compromised, likely senile, person.

Hell, you might as well have Lisa Murkowski, Mitt Romney, or Susan Collins as Senate Leader.

Cornyn burned his bridges with the conservative base a long, long time ago.

Rarely if ever hear a Texas Democrat complain about Cornhole. That tells you everything you need to know. He’s just another one of them.

With Cornyn the Senate GOP will continue their fine tradition of reaching across the aisle and bending over.

This will be like Kevin McCarthy continuing after Paul Ryan. Maybe Cornyn also has a secret deal with Schumer to get his support, like McCarthy had with Pelosi.

We don't have an opposition party in the Senate beyond writing sternly worded letters and fiesty hearings. People like John Kennedy get fine Youtube clips. The Senate GOP should really be part of the entertainment industry, with their must-see-TV Youtube videos. They do a fine acting job. This is why we have a DOJ, Homeland, Intelligence agencies that are doing whatever they want.
