Hungary said on Friday it had signed a deal to buy four Saab JAS Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, as Budapest finally prepared to approve Stockholm's bid to join NATO after nearly two years of delays.

Hungary was the last member of the transatlantic military alliance holding out against Sweden's historic application to join, which it made in 2022 in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

At a discount, just like Turkey with USA F-16s.

Only FOUR? Hardly worth setting up the maintenance facilities.

“ Only FOUR? Hardly worth setting up the maintenance facilities.”

Exactly my thought. Its a waste of time and manpower to even train.

These fighters are the Toyota Camry’s of the industry. A bit pricey upfront but their lifetime costs are the cheapest around. I’m sure Hungary will be buying more in the future.

Hungary already has a dozen similar models, which is about all of their combat planes. A mere 10 million people.

Similar size Israel is a miraculous exception, by necessity.

Hungary already leases 14 Gripens from Sweden, the only combat aircraft their air force flies. This sale will just put them up to 18. They are currently completely reliant on Sweden for fighter/attack jets.

Doubtful. The Gripen is the only fighter Hungary has. They are completely dependent on Sweden for their fighter/attack jets.

Turkey's "payoff" was getting the jets/upgrades at all, as they have been denied for years, leaving Turkey with an outdated fighter fleet compared to Iran and Greece. They desperately needed the Vipers and upgrades to their fleet of older F-16s. They are paying $23B. Unlike some of the countries we sell weapons to, Turkey gets essentially zero military aid from us. We halted military aid to both Turkey and Greece 25 years ago.

A-10s lol. Even our airforce doesn’t want them. The Gripens are the cheapest modern fighter to operate. It’s about 1/4th the cost per hour to fly as the F-35. And they are made to take off and be serviced from remote locations.

lmao. The US Airforce doesn’t like the A-10. Why else were they trying to retire it?
