Border security is tracking as a top issue for voters, according to the Texas Politics Project. And border protection is the top issue for the candidates running for the Republican nomination to represent the congressional district with the most border miles. District 23 covers more than 800 miles of the Texas Mexico border — including Eagle Pass, the border city that has become the frontline for Operation Lone Star.
Congressman Tony Gonzales, the Republican incumbent in the race, has been accused by his four primary opponents of not being tough enough on protecting the border and being a RINO.
At a recent forum organized by the Bexar County Republican Party with candidates seeking the GOP nomination for Congressional District 23, Gonzales was a no-show.
“We are very fortunate that we have almost 100% attendance here with our candidates that are running in CD 23,” said the Bexar County GOP Party Chair Jeff McManus.
“There's only one person missing, and unfortunately, he's been missing many times in many votes that have been taken on behalf of good constitutional conservatives. But I'm not going to mention his name,” he said.
It should be of little surprise that Gonzales skipped the event. The Texas Republican Party censured him in March and said he violated the party’s principles with his votes in support of marriage equality. After the Uvalde massacre, which is in the district, he voted in favor of a bipartisan firearms restrictions bill.
But when he spoke to reporters, Gonzales shrugged off the censure and the prospect that it would bring a cadre of primary challengers.
“Anybody who wishes to challenge me — it’s a fool's errand. I’ll run you into the deep end of the pool every single time and drown you. So, I welcome it,” he said.

Voted for the J6 committee
Primary is March 5th.
Who to support?
Any veteran running?
This needs done all across the country.
Looks like Gonzales’ backers have enticed enough fake opponents into the race that they will split up the “against Tony” votes among themselves so he can win renomination.
“Who to support?”
Brandon Herrera.
“Looks like Gonzales’ backers have enticed enough fake opponents into the race that they will split up the “against Tony” votes among themselves so he can win renomination.”
This is what the establishment does, everywhere that it’s necessary. You get the illusion of having a chance to oust a liberal from Congress, but the GOPe won’t tolerate any of that.
Gonzales is arrogant liberal RINO scum and needs to be driven out of office. Trump should get into this primary and endorse one of his opponents, because things like that are what being a wannabe kingmaker is all about. But he probably won’t — too much risk of of “taking an L”.
Julie Clark (GOP county chairman) and Brandon Herrera (gun manufacturer) appear to be the front runners while the other two in the race appear to be nothing but empty names on the ballot to split the vote further.
But even TWO supposedly viable conservative candidates is one too many. Fortunately Texas has runoffs, and Gonzales (I would hope) is unlikely to reach 50% in a multi-way primary.
“Brandon Herrera”.
I’ve received a request from SEALPAC.
Is my support better spent with SEALPAC?
Gosh will it be a lifetime Rino like testor or a record of freedom like Rosendale. O wait. Trump backed the McCarthy McConnell in that race to perpetuate the tyranny.
The Republican Party is big pharma, big dem spending, forever war. Uniparty alert.
Gonzales is my Congress-critter. TX-23 is a large district consisting of mostly Hispanic surnames. Since many folks still vote for their ‘tribe’, a ‘R’ candidate here had better have an Hispanic sounding name or at least look Hispanic.
Tony is an OK guy but his office(s) don’t answer emails or letters - zilch, nada. But as noted, his conservative vote is an untrustworthy thing.
Once I figure out who the ‘D’ opponent is I will decide on my ‘R’ vote.
Vote Victor Avila.
Vote for Brandon Herrera!
