BEAUMONT — Rick Perry kind of thinks the term “RINO” — Republican in name only, that is — is “sexy.”
The former Texas governor, stumping for House Speaker Dade Phelan in his Southeast Texas district last week, made light of recent accusations that he, Phelan and several other Republicans are actually RINOs.
“I think it's kind of sexy, frankly,” Perry told a crowd of roughly 400 people, putting his hand on his head to mimic a rhino’s horn. “When you think about it... it’s one of the baddest boys on the block, right?”
Attendees laughed in response — but then the former governor, who also served as energy secretary under former President Donald Trump, turned serious. “Dade Phelan is no more a RINO than Rick Perry,” he said.
Most Republicans bristle at the smear that is increasingly being weaponized against elected members of the state’s deeply divided GOP.
Perry jokingly embraced it as he makes campaign stops across the state this election cycle to boost several House Republicans facing difficult reelection campaigns because of their votes to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton last year. Phelan, the Beaumont Republican who has led the lower chamber through two sessions, is Paxton’s No. 1 target. Early voting started Tuesday for the March 5 primary.

I lost any respect I may have had for Perry the day he came out with an executive order for mandatory vaccinations of every little girl aged 11-12 with Gardasil to prevent HPV. YES, he did this in 2007.
Rick Perry has always been about what’s in his best interests. He proved it again with his support of Dade Phelan.
I generally like Rick but this reminds me that he once was a Democrat. He has always laid a few boners despite other good decisions.
“Nothing wrong with either one of them. They’re both good guys. Find a Dem to go after.”
You need to get informed. Phelan is essentially letting the Democrats decide big things. To get elected, he has Democrat committee chairmen. Why have the majority if the minority has that kind of power? Very good, conservative legislation comes over from Senate and dies or get very watered down in House. Phelan pushed Paxton’s impeachment without proper procedures, poured tons of money into it and failed because it was stupid. Perhaps he had a hissy fit that Paxton called him out for appearing drunk while conducting his official duties as Speaker. If he wasn’t drunk, he has some sort of condition to make him appear so. Thus, he has earned the moniker “Drinker of the House”. It makes no sense for Perry to jump on his bandwagon so I wonder what he is getting out of this ridiculous endorsement. Phelan is no help to the party that gave him the opportunity to be in that role.
That’s the last word I’d use to describe a RINO.
We’re trying to get rid of our RINO House member here in district 72, Drew Darby. Governor Abbott will be here for the 2nd time Friday.
Thanks for the ping!
WE need to send every Rino down the road. Perry held his nose until he finished his good work for PDJT. Then he bailed.
Trump is a taskmaster,,,,Perry is not used to having his balls racked by a result oriented boss.
THese guys need to understand one effin thing...we have a country to save,,, damn their country clubs straight to hell if they are in the way.
I would move to Helotes Texas if I could,,,,you folk are leading the fight against tyranny and I want to be a part of it.A lot of Patriots feel the same way.
Are you talking about the water treatment? That’s all I found.
It is interesting that people who don’t even live in this state are all in for Perry’s endorsements-if they don’t live here, they don’t have a dog in the hunt-it is not their state reps we are talking about. They would do better to concentrate on the primaries in their own state, IMO...
I’ll admit that over the years Perry has had some admirable moments-but he has also showed his RINO credentials in some spectacularly bad choices. Now that he is out of the political game, he is likely repaying some old favors from the past from the Bush bunch-either for money or a business advantage...
Liking Perry is hardly the issue-support for RINO candidates is what is at issue here. What state do you live in? Are the reps in the primaries there pure as the driven snow? Are there RINOs in the races, etc?

Hear, hear!!
Bears repeating...such a fine post :)
And, we are STILL waiting to hear what state Sacajaweau hails from.
Well, Sacajaweau ....
Muchas Gracias-I make an effort not to make comments during primary elections about candidates in states other than Texas, since I don’t live/vote there-I just don’t see it as being appropriate. if the voters there want a RINO, so be it-and I’ll be happy to criticize them, along with all RINOs who manage to get elected once they are past the general election and actually in the house of reps...
Mr. I’m going to eliminate these five agencies...Department of, uh uh uh, umm, uh.
I grew up 14 miles from the Perry’s. Know Rick’s mother and knew his father. But I’ve never met Rick, I am a few years older.
I do not wear the RINO label. It is likely that Rick is repaying and old favor or a connection to the Bush’s, he does not typically act like most RINO’s. This is a Bush connection issue.
Phelan MUST GO. I don’t believe anyone can save him after what he did to Ken Paxton. Phelan is a slimy, back stabbing CA transplant. He is NOT LIKED by anyone I know. Phelan does not deserve to be called a Texan. He lies too much.
