Officials have asked Gov. Maura Healey to send in the Massachusetts National Guard to stop violence and address security concerns at a troubled high school in a city south of Boston, some school committee members said Monday.
Four of the seven members of the Brockton School Committee backed the National Guard request amid teacher shortages and budget deficits, but city officials weren't unanimous in their support.
The governor's office acknowledged the concerns about Brockton High School, where teachers reported fighting and drug use in the hallways, and verbal abuse of staff. “Our administration is committed to ensuring that schools are safe and supportive environments for students, educators, and staff," Healey's office said.
Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan, who serves as chair of the school committee, said he forwarded the request to the governor on Friday, even though he opposed it. “National Guard soldiers are not the answer,” he said.
School committee members who backed the request held a news conference Monday to press their case for help. They said National Guard personnel could be used as hall monitors or even substitute teachers.

Fascists wanting to faschist.
The NG is being set up to be the evil group that abuses students. They will end up being sued and prosecuted. I am guessing the police already said no.
“… fighting and drug use in the hallways, and verbal abuse of staff.“
BUT…”Our administration is committed to ensuring that schools are safe.”
We can take their commitment to the bank just like we can trust Hochul’s commitment that businesses in NYS won’t be persecuted and destroyed for wrong-think.
Expelling the chronic thugs and druggies is the answer.
And to put a cherry on top, if the kid is to be expelled, the school is legally obliged to still provide an education for him in some cases up to his 22nd birthday. The parents also benefit from having a child declared handicapped means they can collect SSI payments from Social Security. This is sometimes called ‘crazy money’.
Safe for whom ?
Geez, maybe we need the United Nations Peacekeepers to come in. It’s obvious Americans are unable to handle all the chaos.
Exactly. The second one of the guardsmen broke up a fight or something similar, they would scream racism, and every other thing under the sun they could think of, even if the entire incident was captured from beginning to end on school video cameras
“Mammy!…”
Exactly my thought. They have solutions to these problems, already written down in some form. It’s called suspension and expulsion as an example if you’re caught fighting and you are the instigator, immediate two weeks suspension out of school. Then, for remainder of the school year, any issues, no matter how minor real result in another out of school suspension. If you get caught fighting again, you get expelled.
Do that every single time in your student population will dwindle, but the problem students will be gone.
Parents plus teachers and administrators - all are responsible for not establishing discipline and training self-discipline.
NOT a Massachusetts National Guard responsibility.
Sadly, we needn’t guess.
Wow, they’ve mismanaged so badly they actually want the US military to invade them? Bizzaro land.
If you expel the thugs and druggies who is going to teach gender studies in the school. For Pete’s sake Librarians in the reddest states have graphic books about all deviant forms of sex in school libraries.
If the librarian is gone, there is no saving it. Close the doors.
They can reap what they sow
And, throw in the fact that weed is legal in Mass. and the problem won’t go away any time soon...
I went through Massachusetts public schools in the 1970s - it was horrible then too.
Two suggestions.
1. A special tax on all registered voters in the School District, to pay for the National Guard.
2. An “entrance examination” for the 7th Grade.
Bring back corporal punishment. Have the assistant principal a 6’4’, 235# former NCAA martial arts champion, administer the strokes.
This is one of those times in the words of my son “remove the warning labels and let nature take it’s course”.
Scummiest city in Massachusetts.
Lynn is a close second.
Another Reason to Homeschool
Is this the wonderful “Real World Socialization” homeschoolers are missing out on?
Oh....And where in the real world of the workplace have the National Guard been needed to maintain order?
Why are children expected to cope with an environment that would win millions for an adult?
(Just wondering.)
