Former President Donald Trump must pay nearly half a billion dollars as a bond to New York State before he can appeal the ruling by Judge Arthur Engoron last week that he must pay $354 million in fines — over $450 million, with interest — for fraud.
Critics have noted that Trump is the only person ever to be sued under an obscure New York fraud statute that does not require any harm be done, and that effectively criminalizes the everyday practice of real estate valuations in negotiations with banks.
Though Attorney General Letitia James — who ran for office promising to target Trump — claimed that no one is above the law, her case against Trump marks the only such case in the history of the state. And the staggering fine is likewise unprecedented.

“Conservatives” are weak everywhere.
But Lawfare requires control of institutions, and Leftists control them all.
F**k it. Ignore it and make NY arrest him or seize his properties. Let’s get this stuff going because the Democrats do not have the general public behind them.
The rest of us can try and get on juries and vote not guilty no matter the crime as a protest against an extremely corrupted judicial system.
I’m already at the point where. As a middle-aged, middle class White male, I may as well start being racist against minorities because they are out to get me and mine and openly admit it.
“As a last “resort,” I pray he doesn’t have to mortgage Mar-a-Lago, Bedminster or Trump Tower.”
Might be a wise move to get rid of his New York properties, but if he announced an intent to sell, it might drive the price down.
Yup.
Plus interest. Goes up every day.
Welcome to New York.
It started with Alex Jones and most didn’t care because it was Alex Jones.
$1.5 billion for saying Sandy Hook was fake.
You are an idiot. In your hatred of Trump you fail to see what this is all about.
It’s just another step in the demise of this Country.
But your hatred blinds you.
It only looks difficult. But it’s not.
The reason it looks difficult is we assume they’re using law against Trump. But they’re not using anything remotely related to law.
If they were using law, it would have the appearance of justice.
Why does the deep state avoid using the law? Because the law defeats their every purpose. The law is on our side.
When the defeat of the deep state is fully recognized, we will see how easy it was.
This is just wrong. Trump is by no means the only person ever to be sued under this statute. It hasn’t been used often, but a quick search of westlaw brings up a handful of cases previously brought under this statute. And those of course are just the ones with published legal opinions.
The fine may be unprecedented though.
“He can take it to the federal level without paying NY anything.”
No he can’t.
“Appeal this to the SCOTUS.”
He can’t do that. Not until after a ruling by the NY Court of Appeals (our Supreme Court).
“If the appellate court in NY would take the case.”
A party has the absolute right to appeal to the Appellate Division, there’s no “if.” Not that they’ve been kind to Trump so far in this case, he’s lost two prior appeals there.
You should have stopped there. Typical of some Freepers who don't like the message to either claim anti-Trump or make the attacks personal. I'm questioning the judicial system. Nearly everyone on this thread is stating the same thing, but you have a burr up your rear regarding me personally.
Judgments in NY accrue interest at 9%. Being a judgment creditor is the best investment in the country.

The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.
“Before it gets to the supremes, he still must post the bond.
Nope. NYS has no control over that. “
Uh yes they do. His appeal dies without it. End of story.
“No he doesn’t. There are obvious federal violations. The fifth amendment is violated, the eight, the 14th.
He has a lot of grounds for a federal lawsuit against these shitty people.”
NO he does NOT. Losing a lawsuit is NOT grounds to sue the prosecutors or the judge. End of story. If he tries it it will be dismissed so fast your head will spin and his lawyers will likely be sanctioned and maybe brought up on ethics charges.
“A losing defendant needs an appeal bond, which is required by both federal and state courts, to secure their right to appeal an adverse judgment and stay the plaintiff’s execution of that judgment. The process of appealing involves posting a full judgment in addition to posting interest.
Looks like that would include the supremes.”
So I’m a NY lawyer but I don’t practice in court all that often. Nevertheless I’ve dealt with a couple of appeals from judgments over the years (including one for about $200k last year) and there was no bond requirement. Does anyone ACTUALLY know (without guessing) why this case requires it?
I see blindness.
“...New York has made the rules and decided to crush someone they don’t like....”
Go ahead and make up the rules. Truth will win out. Lettia should take note of what happened down in Georgia. I suspect she thinks she is smarter than Fanni.
Because this case is not about law, it’s about lawfare.
