“Hawaii’s governor wants to impose a $25 ‘climate fee’ on tourists...”

I guess the fact that they no longer have to compete with California for tourists gives them some room to ‘enhance revenue’ a bit.

Yep. Used to be beautiful, laid-back, and relaxing. Now it’s packed with yayhoos, and everything costs WAY more than it used to, not too long ago. Used to go just about every year. No more. The fun is gone.

True. Aren’t they suggesting a one-time fee when you arrive, though.

Last time I went on vacation was for my honeymoon back in 2002 to Saipan (5 days).
9/11 was still fresh and I was searched in Japan (starting point) and in Saipan (return trip).
I was the only ‘white’ guy on that flight, and I was the only one strip searched, and they ran a bomb dog over all of my belongings. (Saipan)
None of it made sense to me back then.

That sounds like a nightmare vacation. Sorry you had to endure a strip search and bomb dogs. After I moved to Idaho in 2000, my resources were a bit slim from a self financed relocation. We still managed a few overnight trips to Yellowstone. My oldest son cared for the pets on the overnight. After my oldest son passed in May 2012, we no longer had any help to watch the pets, so trips have been limited to same day together. If a multi-day out of town is necessary, one of us stays home to care for the pets. My last business trip to San Diego was Sept 2017. None since then.

Considering what led up to it, it didn't bother me (I was understanding about that)... it was that half of the ones in front and behind me were either rag-heads or red-dots, and NONE of them got searched, and I was STILL paranoid about every muzzy I saw, even in Japan. (And, I was with my new wife...)

Sorry to hear about your son, may he rest in peace.

On a lighter note, couldn't you assign the pets to guard potatoes? (just kidding 😁)

For anyone wanting to go to Hawaii, this will not stop them. Now, if they decided on a higher amount and/or making it a per night fee, they might lose small percentage of tourists.

They'll get there eventually. Wouldn't want the sticker shock to scare off the marks too soon.I'm not aware of a 'fee' of this sort that has ever been reduced. They will just bump it up incrementally forever.

“How much of that expected $68 million ends up in the Hawaii Democrat Party’s treasury”

Good question. I wouldn’t mind paying $25 for extra fire trucks, etc, but political maneuvering is not OK
