"Australia is practically a totalitarian authoritarian hell hole. Why anyone would want to go there is beyond me."

I understand your point of view and share it to an extent. Australians are far more docile and compliant than we are. I spent six weeks there recently and clearly saw that. However, they like it, and not all states are the same. Victoria and NSW are the worst, while Queensland and the Northern territories are more independent minded. I cannot over emphasize how well the Australian society works, and works together, even though it has at least as much, if not more diversity, than our own. Whereas our culture has significant Hispanic and Black components, Australia has as much of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Aboriginal influences. From what I saw, there was nowhere near the cultural fractiousness we see here. On the down side, the food was unbelievably bland, eating out and any services were staggeringly expensive because of the high minimum wage, and it is true, not a joke, that all the wildlife there wants you dead.

It was in 1996 that citizens voluntarily voted in gun control.

That was the beginning of the end for the Land Down Under.
