If Americans could buy Chinese EV’s at $10,000 a pop, I guarantee you the US auto industry would collapse.
To that end, US officials have not - and probably will not - allow the import of Chinese cars.
BYD ev’s quality suck and they also spontaneously start on fire easier.
“To that end, US officials have not - and probably will not - allow the import of Chinese cars.”
BYD cars assembled in Mexico would be protected by the NAFTA agreement exactly like the Ford,GM and Chevy cars assembled in Mexico this is exactly why they would build a factory in Mexico really the only reason it would be cheaper to assemble them in China with shorter supply chains and lower labor costs plus bribes in Mexico. Shipping cost for the Chinese is next to nothing on their national owned mega ships. It’s the tariffs they need to avoid and a BYD made in Mexico is a Mexican car not a Chinese car.
Remember the average person drives less than 40 miles round trip per day. Offer them a $15000 NEW car that can cover three times that distance between charges and charge at home in a few hours each night to cover those 40 miles. You couldn’t produce the demand for a vehicle that is less than 15K new with tech that the younger generation expects.
We are an urban country the vast majority of people live in dense cities a 200 mile EV means charging once a week for the average urbanite the suburbanites with garages will never need a charger outside that garage for 99% of their travels for the 1% of road trip miles which in reality is less than three times per year for most people you can rent a car for $22 a day for a sedan or $28 for an cross over SUV three times per year is a blip of disposable income plus you keep those miles off your daily driver the economics make.sense to rent vs drive long distances when you include tires, oil, spark plugs, timing belts ect. Unlimited mileage rentals are the way when it comes to road trips. For 20 something a day you can depreciate someone else’s asset by hundreds of miles per day. It’s a no brainer.
I always rent for road trips never take my nice cars on crap roads with semis chunking rocks everywhere. Plus you can rent a car with self drive tech and go hands free on the motorways without the $10,000 initial capex to get FSD tech.
