Alexei Navalny’s Death Marks End of Political Dissent in Russia
Wall Street Journal via MSN (means no pay wall) ^ | Feb. 17, 2024 | Ann M. Simmons

ussian opposition figure Alexei Navalny’s death Friday at a Russian prison camp in the Arctic silenced a man who was arguably the most influential remaining critic of President Vladimir Putin and the authoritarian state the former spy has methodically built on the wreckage of the Soviet Union.

Putin, who has effectively run Russia for 24 years and is seeking to extend his time in office for another six years in elections set for next month, now strides the Russian political stage with almost no visible challengers. Many of those who have opposed him have ended up in prison, or dead.

Since Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Kremlin has introduced laws to punish critics of its military campaign, muzzled independent media, branded pro-peace authors and artists as “foreign agents” and denied Russians the ability to publicly express opinions about the war. Authorities have unleashed a wave of repression to ensure compliance. Many ordinary citizens have been swept up in a crackdown and handed fines and lengthy jail times for what authorities view as discrediting the army or spreading misinformation about Russia’s stalled military campaign. A 72-year-old woman who questioned Russia’s conduct in the war in Ukraine online was sentenced recently to 5½ years in jail.

Meh. Navalny was a spy who was trying to overthrow Putin for globohomo.

And before that Navalny identified as a 'far right' nationalist and Russo-supremacist....he was a shape shifter whose only value to the West was his ability to foment dissent inside Russia.

The main difference is Russian culture accepts and could be argued necessitates a strongman

We do not and never have except Lincoln at war it could be argued to a point though he did actually stand for election in 64

It’s being imposed here and half the population ignored

Putin is polled for popularity by western polling non stop and it remains very high in the 80s

Biden and his mgt have record low numbers but continue to impose their will over a populace from which they likely stole an election

The opposition here is under whithering attack by the state

Honestly who’s in more trouble ?

Say what you need to cope with the idiocy of the Neocons, but as long as the Neocons are getting SPANKED, the world is FAR SAFER.

And, what did Epstein’s murder mean? That pedos will be protected even if they are elites?

I recognize that Russian operatives might have murdered this guy — for whatever reasons. But, if we are to entertain theories, how about pedos? Which people screaming about this guy’s murder profited by Epstein’s murder?

That bears repeating!!!!

“Yep, that Putin guy is a bastion of morality, the pinnacle of Christianity.

He rails against “the West” and her descent into whatever, while this sombich divorces his wife and shacks up with a girl young enough be his daughter, passes red meat legislation but fails to ban abortion, and kills enemies like a Clinton.

Putin has the Cross in his hand and the devil in his heart. Anyone who looks up to this POS isn’t a conservative.”

‘Operatives’? Huh? Navalny was in prison and he was murdered by government officials acting on orders from Putin.

How many of the 10 commandments has Putin - that “great Christian hero” - broken already?

he’s *killed* innocent people

he’s *stolen* what wasn’t his

he’s *lied* about his neighbor

he *covets* his neighbor’s property ...

etc.

Is it possible Navalny had the covid shot?

Doubt that's the case. They tried to poison him with a nerve agent back in 2020 and he almost died.

After he was imprisoned back 2021, he was subjected to all kinds of abuse and suffered many health issues.

It's quite likely he was slowly being poisoned to death.

Navalny is a nobody in Russia. I would bet 8 of 10 Russians would ask “who?” if you told them he died.

He is another gas-lighting, manufactured propaganda figure of the West. Much like Zelensky.

Who are the real “opposition” in Russia? the former Communist Party. They have been around forever and have the largest minority seats in parliament. Sorry, folks.

Until Western elite, gaslight fantasies about Russia are gone, we will stumble from deadly and expensive policy mistake to mistake.

No, it marks that end of the CIA's attempt at orchestrating a color revolution in Russia, one that cause unrest and harm the quality of life of the Russian people but benefit our elite.

Our elite want to turn Russia into what it was in the 1990s-- a place they can work with corrupt oligarchs to make money there, just like they have been doing in Ukraine for the last 10 years.

Your narrative is laughable.

Killing one man in prison did not decrease political dissent.

There isn't any significant political dissent in Russia. Life has gotten better under Putin for most Russians. The vast majority are behind the war in Ukraine.

The only dissenters are young liberals, the same kind we have in this country that are brainwashed by the same left-wing ideology.

Exactly. There is enormous political dissent against Putin in Russia. None of it was from this nobody.

The dissent is from the right of Putin, not the left. Putin is a moderate and there is much displeasure with his behavior — most particularly mobilizing only 300,000 of the 15 million Reservists in Russia.

The political opposition, the only popular political opposition, says this proves Putin is not taking the threat of NATO seriously and far more should have been mobilized.
