Do they really think we’re that stupid?

If by 'we' you mean the population as a whole- "we the people", then yes.

Nor are they wrong. Plenty of leftist idiots who use emotions instead of thought will fall for it-

1) "something bad happened with a gun"
2) [this one's a prior postulate for the lefties] "guns are bad!"
3) oooh news person said gun laws were made looser! See, it's all related! Gotten tighten the laws"

Pistol vs rifle, inanimate object vs thinking whacko are minutiae that are lost to them because they "think" with feelings.

So much of popular leftist policy, and especially how it's framed/sold to the public, makes sense when you realize it's all about emotions.

I feel good because I'm saving the planet!
I feel good because I'm pro-choice! How could anyone be against freedom of choice? It's freedom!
I feel good because I voted for the first black president!
I feel good because I want to help out poor, helpless migrants!
