After considerable speculation, Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) has decided that he will indeed challenge Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, hoping for a rematch of 2018 when Tester beat Rosendale by 3.5 points. Montana is considered one of the top pick-up seats for Republicans in 2024, if not the top pick-up, along with the Ohio Senate race. Not only are the stakes high for this must-win race, but Rosendale's candidacy also creates a messy situation for Senate Republicans, including and especially National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC) Chairman Steve Daines, who is also from Montana.
Daines has already endorsed Tim Sheehy for the race. Sheehy, who is the CEO of Bridger Aerospace and a former Navy SEAL, announced his candidacy last June.
"It’s unfortunate that rather than building seniority for our great state in the House, Matt is choosing to abandon his seat and create a divisive primary. Tim Sheehy has my full support because he is the best candidate to take on Jon Tester. Whichever party wins the Montana Senate seat will control the United States Senate in 2024, and Republicans cannot risk nominating a candidate who gave Jon Tester the biggest victory of his career," Daines said in a statement.

Daines is NRSC. No thanks.
I assume this means Sheehy won’t fight open borders and will support lots of overseas wars.
You don’t get the support of the NRSC unless you are pro-illegal-immigration and pro-Ukraine funding.
The People’s Republic of China champions a “Harmonious Society” as one of its slogans. Just saying
Translating that gutless liberal shitsucker Steve Daines:
“Rosendale is going to mop the floor with our boy Sheehy in the primary, in which case we’ll make sure he never gets near the Senate. It’s RINO or nothing! Mitch says so!”
In “the biggest win of Tester’s career” the GOPe allowed Tester to outspend Rosendale by a margin of nearly 4:1. They are well on the way to having the same thing happen again.
Even so, they just might find out the hard way that 2024 is not 2018 and they may have to hold their RINO noses and watch as an actual conservative wins a Senate election — despite their best backstabbing efforts.
Biden has 200 million ready to go. Republicans have been spending on nonsense and hardly has any money. Thankfully money isn’t everything but it helps.
They also have major advantages in at least 90% of their most vulnerable House seats, and are pretty wealthy when it comes to challenging weak GOP incumbents too.
Many of those weak GOP House incumbents have a decent amount of party cash -- at least if they are liberal. OTOH the national party is looking the other way and smirking as good conservatives such as Scott Perry (PA) and David Schweikert (AZ) are getting more and more likely to go down in flames in November.
Final 2023 campaign finance reports -- Democrats way ahead in the key races
The same people who funded Matt Rosendale in 2018!
And thus, the base voluntarily gives major power and influence to the establishment orgs and PACs. The so-called MAGA candidates win the primaries and then they abandon them to twist in the wind against a Democrat onslaught, voluntarily making McConnell's comments about "candidate quality" a factual statement. Then ridiculous "news" sites like TGP post articles about McConnell "withdrawing funding" from candidates when he had zero power to do so - he can only control where his PACs spend money, which should only be supplemental support, not the main ball game. The articles should have been about lack of fundraising to prompt the base they need to get off their behinds and support their candidates.
Trump just endorsed Sheehy on TruthSocial. So may not matter now.
2018-Ronendale is a loser. Mid terms go against the party in the WH. Will this be different in a POTUS election? I wanted Oz to be the nominee in Penn. Does it mean Mccormick would have won? Rosendale has at least won the state-wide house seat.
Sheehy. Why does this guy have to go for the top job? Unvetted? Let’s just say he made too much money too fast. Perot made his money on government contracts. These people no one knows yet they can’t aim lower for like a house seat? There will be the carpet bagger charge and then the racism one over something not worth looking into. Tester is the incumbent. All are formidable. Newcomers need to earn it. Parachuting in doesn’t cut it. Think Oz, Herschel, Lynn Swann. The millionaire contributor in Ga. Remember Bill Simon Jr? A total joke. Our people are stupid.
Between this stuff and Trump’s misguided (again) endorsement, we could be looking at Dr. Oz 2.0.
Sheehy isn’t a bad person and isn’t some celebrity dilettante like “Electable Oz”, but he’s in way over his head here and all the establishment money in the world isn’t likely to save him. Republicans don’t HAVE all the money in the world anyway — but Democrats sure seem to.
Even with Trump’s Golden Endorsement, Oz barely made it out of the primary in PA in 2022. Sheehy has a good chance to NOT make it. When Rosendale wins the primary despite all of the establishment — including Trump — supporting his rival, then we’ll see where the money goes. My guess is it will dry up completely; sorry, Matt.
Mitch was right. It’s candidate quality. Why doesn’t the sitting governor switch gears and run? The senate is more important but nobody’s told him. Doesn’t want to take the chance John Thune did when he went up against Tim Johnson and Tom Daschle. Thune had balls back then and did for 2 terms.
Trump’s endorsements continue to be horrible.
I hope Rosendale wins.
