Why are people climate change deniers? Study reveals unexpected results

Do climate change deniers bend the facts to avoid having to modify their environmentally harmful behavior? Researchers from the University of Bonn and the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA) ran an online experiment involving 4,000 US adults, and found no evidence to support this idea. The authors of the study were themselves surprised by the results. Whether they are good or bad news for the fight against global heating remains to be seen. The study is published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

A surprisingly large number of people still downplay the impact of climate change or deny that it is primarily a product of human activity. But why? One hypothesis is that these misconceptions are rooted in a specific form of self-deception, namely that people simply find it easier to live with their own climate failings if they do not believe that things will actually get all that bad.

"We call this thought process 'motivated reasoning,'" says Professor Florian Zimmermann, an economist at the University of Bonn and Research Director at IZA.

"Why are people climate change deniers? Study reveals unexpected results"

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

Global warming alarmists, even after several years, have failed to volunteer a reasonable explanation as to why greenhouse gasses like methane and CO2 fail to hold down the heat during a midday solar eclipse of an otherwise warm sunny day.

In my opinion, so-called "global warming" is nothing more than a government / industrial-manufactured crisis to raise unconstitutional federal taxes, the feds having no express constitutional power to police the environment, unconstitutional taxes facilitated by the long arm of the ill-conceived 16th Amendment (16A).

The immediate step that Democratic and Republican Trump-supporting patriots need to take to repeal 16A imo, the 17th Amendment (17A; popular voting for federal senators) needing to disappear too, is the following. Patriots need to support hopeful Trump 47 not only with a new Congress that will support him to finish draining the swamp, but will also support him in leading the states to repeal those disastrous amendments, effectively “seceding” ALL the states from the unconstitutionally big federal government by doing so.

Majority in new poll say Biden, most members of Congress don’t deserve new term: Gallup (2.2.24)

Consider the repealing of 16&17A as part of reparations for victim taxpayers of the unconstitutionally big federal government for having to pay a lifetime of unconstitutional federal taxes that Congress cannot reasonably justify under its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers, and a few other constitutionally enumerated expenses.

Do climate change deniers bend the facts…”

These “facts” they speak of; might we see a few of them?

“A surprisingly large number of people still downplay the impact of climate change or deny that it is primarily a product of human activity. But why?“

Well, for starters, (putting aside that a gas as fractionally insignificant as co2 can trap heat in the atmosphere) the earth and atmosphere are far to large and man’s footprint on the earth far too small to affect things. Man can pollute the hell out of his immediate area but he cannot cause heat waves or ice ages.

Where is my unicorn, and other stupid questions.

‘Cause most people recognize a scam when they see one. That is why fraud is a hard thing to pull off.

Why are people climate change deniers?

Same reason they don’t believe in ghosts.

“Climate science” makes astrology look good by comparison.

Oooo, I just might "borrow" that most clever observation.

The Vogtle 3 reactor in Georgia, which went online in July 2023, was the first new nuclear reactor to go online since 2016. They can ‘pledge’ all they want, but the fact is that they've been talking about global warming for decades now and the phys.org article referenced was from December 2023. Further, China and Russia did not sign on.

I read Chicken Little in 1st grade, I learned a valuable lesson at that point and never forgot it. There are reasons for fables and stories , to teach the simple minded how survive in the real world.

Not a criticism, but that is the dumbest article about the dumbest study I have ever read.

UBonn is a deep supporter of these monstrous fly-in-from-all-over-the-world carbon-exuding global swarming symposiums -- der Leyen's plane was parked next to Lurch's, and neither 16-seater had brought more than 4 people in it (albeit Coons/Manchin/Sinema buddied up in another, the limpest mile-high menage a trois of all recorded history, no doubt); how apropos that their confirmation bias was confirmed in the study by ... wait for it ... "politically self-identified" confirmation bias.

We’ve had swarms of big, fat robins strutting around in our backyard.

Just don't trip and fall if you are walking amongst them.

Of course, you are correct there are no more hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, animals dying then they’re having to the past 100 years. This is according to studies by NASA, the NOAA, the national fire service. There is nothing to worry about. We are blessed with an amazing climate

Phys(dot)org is a great place to read about science, with the exception of climate science. They are the ones demonstrating motivated reasoning.
