Maybe he meant to give us peace signs he saw in videos about Woodstock. Gave one as half of the two fingers.
There is a music video from the theatrical release Bean (1997 movie) in which the visiting British Mr.Bean passes a crude American in Los Angeles who gives him the finger. He thinks that’s the American greeting and spends the rest of the first day in the US giving everyone the gesture.
Song was I Love L.A. by Randy Newman.
