Drone from Iran proxy evaded US defenses because it was mistaken for US drone: official

A U.S. official confirmed to Fox News the drone from an Iranian proxy that killed 3 American servicememebers in Jordan and injured others got past the air defenses for Tower 22 because it was mistaken for a U.S. drone expected to return to the base at the same time.

The Wall Street Journal initially reported on this development on Monday. A U.S. official confirmed the information to Fox News.

Even if it were ours, just SHOOT IT DOWN. It was unmanned right?

un MAN ed drone? I mean un person ed drone?

Maybe we should check with the AI running our drones what their “preferred pronouns” are.

What happens when OUR AI drones decide that the fight is “not fair” and decide to even up the score a little.

The “Terminator” series is becoming reality.

So no IFF squawk? WTH?

Three possibilities:

1.) It was flying in formation with the U.S. Drone, and not resolvable.
2.) The U.S. drone was not equipped with a Mode-5 transponder, or the U.S. base did not have a Mode-5 interrogator.
3.) Iran hacked Mode-5. (Remote chance. Even if they did, they would not squander that advantage for what was a pinprick raid. What would China or Russia pay for that advantage?)

The transponder keys should be updated frequently. (I do not know how they are handled.) Military GPS receivers are supposed to be tamperproof, and the keys (used to be) changed annually. If you had access to a military GPS receiver there was a rigmarole you had to go through to update keys.

It was a “THEM” drone. The new improved US military isn’t allowed to distinguish between a man or a woman……..why should an attack drone be any different?

U.S. and NATO IFF are considered cryptologically secure. That means if an adversary had detailed design information, they would have no advantage in trying to break the cipher, the security is in the keys which are changed frequently.

Seems there was no IFF, the IFF codes were given to the Iranians or our military is now so incompetent because of DEI that they can’t keep track of our own drones and whether they are friendly or not. None of those options speaks well of our military and our civilian “leadership”.

I do not the details of Mode-5 encryption. I worked on a system that shared an interface with a Mode-5 interrogator. Just an educated guess, but it appears to be a military version of the unencrypted civilian ATCRABS mode-S, or mode-select. In mode S, the interrogator can interrogate a specific aircraft, each of which has a distinct ID number. (There is a mode S “all call” which asks all transponders in a 1.4 degree sector to identify themselves.) The aircraft responds with information requested by the interrogator, in a highly formatted fashion. Similar interface with mode-5, but encrypted.

Well, this looks Iike a pre-planned attack using info given to the Iranians by Biden’s former envoy to Iran.

Never believe the first reason they give you. The fault lies with human execution of the defense protocols and lazy leadership.

Exactly. They’re trying to get their story straight. Based on the comments that the Iranian done came in low, it sound like they didn’t see it approaching until it was too late.

Most likely it was human error, with an operator mistakenly designating the track as “friendly” because it coincided with a returning drone. Alternatively, if you interrogate a new track that is in close proximity to a friendly track, you can end up with incorrect data from a friendly track’s transponder being associated with the new track. It’s also possible (though rare) for the system to swap track data when 2 tracks are in close proximity. I’ve seen all of these happen.

It’s possible the US drone didn’t have IFF. Outfitting some smaller drones are still a work in progress, even though there are miniaturized Mode 5 transponders available. USAF is lagging the joint USN/US Army program.
