The conditions in the 1940s were completely different. There was a declared war. Also, the U.S. firebombed both countries and twice nuked Japan; the Allies held war crime trials for numerous German and Japanese leaders; Germany was divided into pieces controlled by one of the Allies; the U.S. replace the government in Japan with a new government.

Yes, completely different because we do not have a majority of patriotic Americans in leadership any more. One can argue they simply represent their constituencies. Just look at our cities. The declaration of war is pro forma. Does anyone imagine we would not declare war after our military was attacked at Pearl Harbor, and not only on Japan.
