The Supreme Court has denied death row killer Kenneth Eugene Smith's last minute request for a stay in execution.

Smith will be executed tomorrow in Atmore, Alabama, with nitrogen hypoxia. It will be the first execution of its kind in the US and first known nitrogen execution in the world.

He had begged the court for mercy, citing experts concerns over the method despite previously requesting it.

Yeah, NASA has lost a couple of people in nitrogen-purged rocket tanks that way. They black out so fast they don’t even know to call for help.

He lived 36 years longer than the people he murdered. No matter how he’s executed he still got the best treatment.

“Does this mean he will die of the bends??”

No, the bends is as a result of blood-dissolved nitrogen coming out of solution as a result of the pressure release going from deep (high pressure) to shallow (low pressure) Exactly the same as soda bubbles appearing “out of nowhere” when the bottle is uncapped. That freed-up gas migrates towards muscles and produces intense pain.

There’s no dissolving gas nor pressure involved with this from of execution. It’s like being choked to death without any force, the brain just runs out of oxygen. I’m not sure whether there is panic or euphoria on the way. I can’t see it being panic-free, but as you might imagine, I don’t really care.

The suffocation panic reaction comes from increasing CO2 in the blood. This doesn’t cause any increase in CO2, just a decrease in oxygen (down to zero). A close analogy would be altitude-induced hypoxia, which makes the victim silly and then sleepy and finally dead.

Guy who hired him was a pastor. Pastor committed suicide when they were closing in. This may be in the DM, but my browser blocks it.

Does this mean he will die of the bends??

No. It means he will die very quickly and painlessly due to oxygen deprivation. Those of us who work with nitrogen and other inert gases in an industrial setting are VERY aware of the potential hazard associated with them. In confined spaces, they can displace air (and therefore, oxygen) without being noticed ... until somebody drops dead ... or (better) the O2 alarm goes off.

BTW, the "I GOTTA BREATHE!!!!" sensation is triggered by a buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood, not by a lack of oxygen. He'll take a few breaths of pure N2, pass out, and next thing he's explaining himself to St. Peter ...

May God have mercy on his soul.

PROceed.

I have always found it incredible that we want to extend mercy to the merciless.

In a way it’s mocking them. We’re showing the condemned that we are more civilized than they were when they violated society’s rules. It’s also why we usually grant them a last meal.

Yep, which is why those who want to "hold their breth" take many gasps of air, for the purpose of displacing the CO2.

The method of execution should be the method they used to kill their victim(s).

This should be farmed out to Costco. They have nitrogen for inflating tires. Same stuff could be used for an execution. And Costco sells caskets. How convenient. One stop shopping for an execution.

The graphic accompanying the article refers to nitrogen as a “toxic gas” (Likely to evoke the Nazi’s use of poison gas in the Holocaust), oh my God we are surrounded by an atmosphere of nearly 80% “toxic gas.”

My first execution option would be to execute the criminal — assume a murderer, as just about everyone on death row is — in the same way he killed his victim(s), assuming the state could find anyone to do it. AI powered robots will soon be able to solve the volunteer problem.

A second choice would be to give the convicted killer his choice of method, but he would have to do it himself. Lock him in a container and bury it in the ground with a battery powered light with a 24 hour life. He can do nothing and eventually die of asphyxiation. He would also have a sharp knife, a gun with a single round in the chamber, a syringe containing some deadly poison, one glass of water and a collection of poisons in liquid or pill form, etc. Just for fun, include a noose, somewhere high enough to hang it from, and a stepstool. Add more as you wish. I would include a secure container with venomous snakes and insects except that would be cruel to the animals. I would include deadly spiders but that is too cruel even for me. So let’s stick to poisons and physical instruments of execution. His choice. And he would have to do it himself.

Wait a month, dig up the container, dispose of the body as you wish, and reuse the container until death row is emptied.

This scum hired a hitman to kill his wife. I have no sympathy for him being experimented on with a new killing method.

No.

The “bends” occurs when a diver goes deep and then returns to the surface too fast.

Removing oxygen is the same as when pilots fly too high (or mountain climbers) without oxygen. You would get disorientated and then loose conscious and then die. No pain.

What really scares the Leftists here is that Alabama may just prove that Nitrogen works just fine regarding disposal of trash, and thus all the work they’ve been doing to prevent the use of common drugs for executions will be rendered mute.

The interesting thing now is to see how the Leftists plan to prevent states from obtaining Nitrogen, as it’s not that hard to find.
