Chicago Mayor Johnson targets end to natural gas in new homes, buildings

CHICAGO -- Mayor Brandon Johnson is pushing a plan that would end natural gas hookups in new buildings and homes as the city aims to phase out fossil fuels that intensify the climate crisis, but the idea is already drawing resistance from some unions.

Johnson plans to introduce a "clean" buildings ordinance Wednesday that would end new gas hookups for cooking, heating and hot-water tanks and require electric power instead.

The idea has been kicked around Chicago in recent years. In October 2022, City Hall announced that outside advisers, including advocacy organizations, had recommended a ban as part of a larger climate-fighting plan. Those recommendations inspired the buildings ordinance, which was not publicly available as of Monday.

The law would set an indoor emissions standard that eliminates use of fossil fuels in new construction and building additions of more than 10,000 square feet. It would likely go into effect one year after it's passed by the City Council.

Gas would be replaced by all-electric systems.

"It's a no brainer for anyone building new construction today," said John Gay, president of architecture firm JAQ Corp.

Gas would be replaced by all-electric systems except for the mayor and his friends.

Even if man made climate change existed which it does not unless you believe peeing in the ocean can turn it yellow, what makes this idiot think one city in the entire world is going to change it?

Does the ordinance mandate expanding the generation of the electricity required to support the shift from gas to electric? Specifications saying power must be supplied at sufficient levels in the face of night, clouds, feet of snow, calm air?

How about upgrades to the electrical distribution system to take on the added load? Replacing transformers? Running bigger wire?

In the event of rolling blackouts, do government buildings lose their power first, and regain power last?

What? Burn natural gas to generate electricity, move down transmission lines, through transformers into your house and use to heat a wire or power a heat pump all the while losing energy in each step? That saves the planet how? Where will all the required electricity come from? Unicorns?

Notice how they never talk to electricians when the “experts” talk about electricity.

Lol.

I think the plan is to lose population fast enough that the existing electricity supply will be adequate.

;-)

What he’s really trying to do is KICK OUT Black families from their homes as they will be the ones most impacted by his plan.

So, Mayor Johnson, why do you HATE BLACKS?

(and by the way, mayor, you’re named after two white presidents...we notice racist stuff like that)

They tried this in Berkeley, Kalifornia. The city council passed a similar ordinance. The restaurants and other businesses took it to court, and, amazingly, the court sided with the businesses. Bezerkley will have to find other ways to ruin itself.

I think the electricians would talk about cost and how the customers would refuse to pay it and just skip town.

The ones I know are very well aware of the financial constraints their customers face.

As the Staple Singers so aptly put it, if you want to stop air pollution put your hand over your mouth when you cough and you will have your solution.

Why would gas workers Union support this? That makes no sense.
