But the thing is...in Victorian and Edwardian times, most Brits had good vocabularies.

Look at the entertainment ( Gilbert & Sullivan operettas ), books...even books written for children and tweens...the vocabulary used was great! Which is one reason WHY i have always preferred these books for children.

And actually, it was also true in many places in America as well.
