JFK wasn’t strong going into that election - just as Trump wasn’t in 2016 - even Reagan needed to broker a deal in 1980.. it’s very common.
Trump is showing signs of being very strong in this cycle - and he better be because if it’s close then we have a lot more to worry about than a bad VP pick. The biggest worry is that they will win by cheating again if it’s close.
If he remains this strong and it’s not close - the worry then becomes assassination.
This is why he will chose a MAGA running mate for sure. Someone they hate and fear as much as him. That’s the only security against assassination.
