A politician bidding to run against Vladimir Putin in Russia's upcoming presidential election described the decision to go to war in Ukraine as a "big mistake" in comments to the wives of soldiers on Thursday.

Boris Nadezhdin, representing a centre-right party called Civic Initiative that has no seats in parliament, is seeking to gather the necessary 100,000 signatures from people across Russia to enable him to stand against Putin.

Nadezhdin has promised to present a plan for ending the conflict. Last week he also aimed sharp criticism at the authorities over heating outages that have struck parts of Russia in the depths of an exceptionally cold winter.

"Cities are freezing. Who is guilty?" he asked in a Telegram post. "The huge amounts of money that have been spent and planned for the special military operation could have been invested in improving the quality of life of my fellow citizens."

Yes, Russia is an epitome of democracy, Navalny, Yashin, Kara-Murza and the rest all supporting your admiration, even from their oh-so-comfortable cells!

“Putin welcomes constructive criticism. He calls it his open window policy.”

Now that is funny! Thanks I needed to laugh tonight. :D

Ukraine who we support because of democracy:

https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/11/17/ukraine-elections-war-russia-zelensky/ cancels elections.

https://www.axios.com/2022/03/20/ukraine-ban-political-parties-russian-ties bans 11 opposition parties.

Journalists that ask the wrong questions, even before the war: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-confirms-american-journalist-detained-in-ukraine/ and today: https://www.allsides.com/news/2023-12-10-0319/ukraine-war-musk-asks-zelensky-about-imprisoned-american-journalist-after

Radio stations and news papers get shut down if they say the wrong things: (past 2004) https://www.rferl.org/a/1051771.html and present https://www.thedailybeast.com/ekho-moskvy-forced-to-shut-down-after-being-pulled-from-airwaves

In fact, in the free, democratic, transparent (where casualty reports are a state secret) Ukraine, if you so much as own a HAM radio and dare say something or listen to the wrong thing, you are breaking the law! https://www.dx-world.net/amateur-radio-ban-ukraine/

Funny thing is, in Russia Putin actually faces political opponents that are alive, the opposition party isn’t banned, the elections are being held, TV/print/radio discusses them, journalists actually tearing into Putin are not going to prison, and the topic of the war isn’t off limits (one of the parties is running on an outright anti-war platform). How can that be?

We need to cause a war to have peace. NATO expansion.

A proxy state where we call all the shots and hand pick its leadership, which is dependant on us is sovereign.

A country without elections, that banns 11 parties, has a string of political assassinations, closes newspapers and radio stations, jails reporters that dare say the wrong thing is democratic.

***Doesn’t all this sound a little 1984ish?***

I’m starting to think that whatever my government says, regardless what it is, the opposite is true.

Inflation reduction act
Patriot act
