Turkey has vowed to block two British Royal Navy ships intended for Ukraine to pass through its waters. Last month, Britain said it would transfer the two minehunter ships to the Ukrainian navy to help bolster its sea operations in its war with Russia.
However, the Turkish presidency's communications directorate has now said it will not let the vessels through its Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits.
When Russia first waged war on Ukraine in 2022, Turkey sparked an international agreement that blocks the passage of military ships through the passages for those at war.
Today (Tuesday, January 2), the NATO member country says it has implemented the 1936 Montreux Convention impartially and meticulously in order to prevent a military escalation in the Black Sea.
...... Snip......
The news comes less than 24 hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to "intensify" attacks on Ukraine following strikes in Russia's Belgorod region on Saturday.

So much for all that NATO crap. Trump was right
You mean they were sunk in shallow water?
The definition of stupid is to let Turkey into NATO.
>> If Trump was president none of this would be happening.
👍🏻👍🏻
What is the whacked out British session with Crimea, the Black Sea, and Russia. They’ve been horny for that part of the world since at least the 1850s. I’m finding it hard to identify a single rational British interest there.
Sounds like a history book entry ...
2024: Turkey blocks Royal Navy ships sent to Ukraine as NATO falls apart
Again, the religion of hate displays its true nature. We know what has to happen. Sooner or later.
NATO is useless. Get out of it. Waste of our money. Pull the thousands of military out of Germany and put them on the southern border.
Screw Turkey. Just more backwater scum Muslims.
so Trump wouldn’t have to pull out of NATO ,LOL
Agreed.
Hyperbolic and sensationalist headline. NATO isn’t “falling apart.” This is just Turkey being Turkey; an unreliable ally since the 1970s.
Turkey always plays the fickle mistress, playing her suitors off against each other; and awarding her favors to whichever one praises her charms the most and takes her to the best restaurant.
Under the treaty governing passage through the Bosphorus Turkey must do this. If not Russia could transfer ships from It’s northern fleet to the black sea. Unless you want NATO and Russia in a shooting war. ( This will end badly) . It was bad enough that Biden destroyed the western banking system. If the Bosphorus is not neutral, then Russia will have legitimate cause to invade Turkey. WW3 begins.
Nonsense. Trump was no harder on Turkey than is Joe Biden.
Hardly an example of collapse. The Royal Navy tried to slip these ships through on a technicality. They, as the article notes, didn’t expect to succeed, but they took a shot.
For all Erdogan’s sins, he has evenhandedly enforced the Montreaux Convention. But this evenhandedness inherently impacts Russia more. No combatant can move warships through the Bosphorus or the Dardanelles Straits. Ukraine does not need to, as they are able to keep a merchant shipping corridor from Odessa to Moldovan territorial waters open through their existing forces.
However Russia, which has taken significant warship losses, cannot replace lost larger ships nor effectively use shipyards in the Crimea. The Black Sea Fleet is isolated and can only recieve smaller ships through a tortuous river/canal path from the Baltic ports.
“The definition of stupid is to let Turkey into NATO.”
There was a time when it made sense having Turkey in NATO. But with the rise of islamic fundamentalism in Turkey (which began in the late 1970s) it has become unreliable and outright hostile to our interests.
Turkey wants Russia to give it control over the Crimea again.
Well, I guess we could give all commerce 72 hours to leave through the straits and then permanently shut them down for shipping traffic. Call that aid to Turkey, our NATO ally.
With allies like Turkey who needs enemies.
I’m not sure why Britain wants to continue wasting money on Ukraine, it’s too bad we are as well, but turkey is a NATO ally, supposedly, so any NATO traffic should be allowed through the straits. Otherwise, let’s shut them down, evict turkey from NATO, for simply shut NATO down since it’s useless at this point anyway.
