A mass migration of Northeasterners and Midwesterners into Florida, many of them conservatives leaving Democratic states, has led to the state’s politics turning sharply to the right, experts say.
New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau this month showed that movement is continuing, with hundreds of thousands of people leaving states such as New York, Illinois and California and moving to Florida and Texas in 2022 and 2023.
“The notion of the ‘Big Sort’ … is really proving itself,” said Matt Isbell, a Democratic elections analyst. “That’s the idea that people move based on the politics. … For a lot of retirees, places like Florida are appealing, especially if they’re already conservative.”
According to Census estimates, New York lost nearly 217,000 people to domestic migration from July 2022 to July 2023 and nearly 882,000 since April 2020. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan also lost thousands of residents in that time.
At the same time, Florida gained more than 194,000 people from other states from 2022 to 2023, the largest influx in the nation. Since April 2020, nearly 819,000 people have moved to Florida from within the U.S.

Big Tech is moving as many left wing California voters as they can into Austin and surrounding areas. And they’ve moved enough into Collin County to flip a state legislative seat in Plano for solid R to D.
I’m not seeing refugees from the Left Coast suddenly turning conservative when they get to Texas.
And let’s not forget the Yankee Jews who have moved to south Florida and keep voting for the Hamas supporting Democrats.
Huntsville, with it’s tech industry...is attracting California folks as well. The majority come in...adjust, and prefer the less crime and stress environment. If they were fairly liberal...they usually don’t stay more than a year or two...then try to return to the west coast.
People move for work, weather, or family, not politics.

Liberals carry their voting habits with them wherever they go.
“has led to the state’s politics turning sharply to the right, experts say”
That has yet to be determined.
It’ll take at least a couple of election cycles to really know....so the “unknown experts” as usual, are suffering from an anal cranial inversion......if they even exist at all.
Precisely
Welcome the clear thinking, intellectually and morally unconfused refugees from the Democrat-run hellholes!
The brainwashed wokies and their evil puppet-masters who have invaded Atlanta, Asheville, etc. notwithstanding, the healthy, ascendant states' gain is the decadent cesspools' loss.
Let the wokies sink into their own self-imposed quagmires of filth, crime, self-destruction, and decay. Stupidity is its own punishment.
The wholesome, healthy, ascendant states and their wholesome, healthy, ascendant People will prevail.
Welcome, Good People!
Go to (your self-imposed) hell, Stupid People!
“People move for work, weather, or family, not politics”
Well not always. I did a craigslist transaction earlier this year with a guy that had recently moved from Oregon. He stated politics is exactly why he and his wife moved.....work was a factor but only being a secondary one.
As recently as 20 years ago, Austin was the only major metropolitan area in Texas that voted democrat. The only other cities that Kerry picked up in the 2004 election were El Paso and Beaumont (plus some low population counties along the Mexican border). Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio all voted Republican. Now they are all democrat controlled.
Bingo.
Six members of my immediate family have moved to the Austin area. They all vote straight R. But in Austin their votes count!
Also four adults remotely related and two good friends.
So you got twelve more seriously conservative voters anyway. You’re welcome! :)
As I’ve mentioned several times here in the past, the people of our nation are “self-sorting” as the gap between progressive and conservatives grows wider. No one wants to be trapped behind enemy lines with people who not only despise their political views but despise them as well.
Progressives are getting pretty vocal in their opinion that conservatives do not even deserve to live. Although some will refuse to admit it, many people on both sides of the gap see a civil war in our future.
You do know what the difference between a yankee and a damned yankee is right? 😏
It is a matter of ........ perspective, you are not seeing conservatives going to Tx. You are seeing the less insane CaCaLand citizens getting out.
Note, a conservative from CaCaLand would have voted for Bernie. What is left (aside myself) are the true loonies who think Bernie is a fascist.
The ones who move are, by Tx and most any other standard, whack jobs. But,they had the brains to spot a sinking ship and paddle off elsewhere. Their IQ is probably north of moron. They can be convinced.
What is left are the ones who will set fire to the state. Which is OK by me.
People move because of the consequences of politics. Lots of folks are fleeing high crime, high tax environments, for example.
“People move for work, weather, or family, not politics”
After we retired in 2019, politics is exactly why we moved from Illinois to Missouri. We had talked about moving after retirement because we didn’t like Illinois’ politics and taxes, but the state’s overbearing Covid policies were the last straw, and we fled Illinois in 2020.
To be fair, please keep in mind that DeSantis narrowly won his election over Andrew Gillum, 49.6% to 49.2%, in 2018.
Had Gillum won/stolen that election, things would be quite different today, ie, much, much worse.
