But the divide between Biden and Netanyahu runs deeper.
At the heart of it lies a fundamental disagreement about the role the Palestinian Authority should play in Gaza’s future security and governance and, implicitly, the viability of an eventual two-state solution (however remote). Biden wants the PA to take Hamas’ place once the war is over, while Netanyahu staunchly opposes any PA involvement (even as he refuses to say who else he would prefer to fill the void) – effectively ruling out Palestinian self-rule, let alone a Palestinian state.
Make no mistake: On this, Biden is right and Netanyahu is wrong. And Netanyahu is wrong not because he doesn’t understand the implications of what he’s proposing – the perpetual subjugation of Palestinians, Israel’s international isolation, the constant internal and external security threat not just to Israelis but to Jews worldwide – but because he does.
While there’s no doubt that Israel faces serious risks from Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Tehran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, none represents an existential danger. Israel can fend them off thanks to its qualitative military edge over its regional rivals – developed with American support – as well as its nuclear deterrent and growing ties with regional partners. Indeed, for all Netanyahu’s doomsaying about existential wipeout, he has also spent the past couple of decades touting Israel as a safe bet for long-term investment. Both contentions cannot simultaneously be true, and Netanyahu knows it. He just has an overriding political and – given his corruption trials – personal interest in pretending otherwise.
American interests, however, lie in supporting Israel’s long-term security and promoting regional and global stability – not in bolstering the political or personal agenda of Israel's leader. Which means that Biden has an obligation to step up and do something no US president has ever done: leverage America’s support for Israel to put pressure on Netanyahu to change course – or, failing that, persuade Israelis to dump Netanyahu and do it themselves.
The USA can do without Russian meddling.
Israel can do without American meddling.
If Hamas wants peace free the hostages and pile up the weapons in the middle of streets for IDF collection.
America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests
“Biden wants the PA to take Hamas’ place once the war is over, while Netanyahu staunchly opposes any PA involvement (even as he refuses to say who else he would prefer to fill the void) – effectively ruling out Palestinian self-rule, let alone a Palestinian state.”
I think Netanyahu implied he would prefer to fill the void with a Palestinian who does not intend to exterminate all the Jews. Is the author saying that no such person exists?
The West is weak. We'll get conquered because they will use our rules of civilization against us.
Pretty much.
Quotes:
“to bring a dysfunctional Authority in the West Bank basically to a total pile of rubble in Gaza, it’s a formula for disaster,” Jahshan told Al Jazeera
[Netahyahu:]
“Gaza has to be demilitarised and Gaza has to be de-radicalised,” he told NBC News last week. “And I think, so far, we haven’t seen any Palestinian force, including the Palestinian Authority, that is able to do it.”
The Palestinians want a door to hit Abbas from behind:
Let Israel do what it has to over there. OUR WAR IS HERE.
13 months to go of Joe
Israel has to take control of Gaza away from the Palestenian terrorists. Yes, the entire population wants to destroy Israel. Reporter was asking people on the street in one Palestinian city if they could live in peace with Israel next door. Everyone, men and women, vehemently said no, the Jews had to go, that Israel and Gaza belonged to them alone.
Time for the whole bunch to find some other country to take them in.
Wife’s cousin in Israel had to live with constant bombings of buses and restaurants, living in fear. They finally started taking firm control of the border crossings.
The other mistake they made was disarming the populace. Years back everyone in Israel had a military style rifle, and were expected to know how to use them. Strict gun control laws went into effect. Now the government has loosened them to get as many people as possible armed.
Gaza should be under siege by Israel until all of Hamas is eliminated, including the leadership residing in Yemen where they enjoy their riches and encourage the Houthi to attack Western interests. And sixty per cent of Gazans support Hamas while there are ten other terrorist organizations in Gaza that are supported by the remaining forty per cent. So I don’t feel sorry for them. Their beef is with their leadership that have continually rejected a two state solution, supported by Israel, for decades.
Are you kidding , MEXICO IS AT WAR WITH US, They are allowing terrorists through our border every day.
US Policy is to have a Palestinian Authority and has been since Clinton/Oslo. The rub is that the US doesn’t seem to care who runs it or how it is run. Trump pulled some monies but DID try to get a wider deal done through Kushner (which didn’t materialize but resulted in the Abraham Accords). GWB also pretty much ignored the PA after Clinton warned him that Arafat is treacherous and untrustworthy.
The pressure the left puts on Israel needs to be similarly applied to the PA. Hold real elections. Stop teaching murder cult crap to your kids. Respect civilian lives. Arrest terrorists and jail them. And don’t pay the families of terrorists. Among other things.
UNWRA also needs to be folded up. They exist only to perpetuate “Palestinian Refugees” for generations. No other UN refugee agency recognizes someone as a “refugee” 5 or 7 generations after the fact. Only Palestinians get this special treatment. Enough of that.
Have you seen an actual treaty?
Well said.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. But best is that they go back where they or their bloodthirsty ancestors came from.
Why does no Arab state want that obvious solution? They know what the rag-tag pirates who refer to themselves as "Palestinians" are like, and they refuse to have them in their territory.
The Hamas-PLO-Whateverthehell terrorists calling themselves "Palestinians"--that's like a bunch of convicts in the US calling themselves "Citizens of North America" so they can rob houses in Chicago.
Netanyahu needs to tell Biden and Blinken to butt out!
