(NY) Assembly bill would require Chick-fil-A restaurants on Thruway to open Sundays

ALBANY, N.Y. — A new bill in the New York State Assembly would require all restaurants at Thruway rest stops be open seven days a week.

That includes Chick-fil-A.

The fast food chain has a company policy of being closed on Sundays — which lawmakers backing the bill say is a “disservice and unnecessary inconvenience” for travelers on the Thruway.

The bill was just introduced Wednesday, meaning it has a while to go before it could b voted on or potentially signed into law.

Right now, Chick-fil-A eateries are open at seven of 27 Thruway service areas being rebuilt.

Of course this is targeting Chick-fil-A. If I were Chick-fil-A, I would pull out of the NYS Thruway "GreenApple" rest stops. It would be great if Buccees would come up north but they are fully aware of how business UNfriendly the Northeast is, particularly NYS

Likely the legislator would like that because he has somebody else in mind for those locations.

IMO not unreasonable to expect such locations to be open 7 days a week, but any legislation for that should grandfather in current contracts given to CFA previously.

Perhaps this is McDonald’s trying to sneak its way back in since they apparently got kicked out with the new construction of all the service areas.

If I were Chick-fil-A, I would begin constructing Chick-fil-A restaurants right off certain exits of the highway visible to the drivers then pull out of the service areas

Not seeing how any state government can pass a law to mandate a company be open on a specific day unless the rest stops has an agreement of some sort.

If not Chick-fil-A should just say see you !

Alternatively and probably better, they should simply enable Sunday food truck festivals at those locations. No harm to CFA, but services for drivers on Sunday.

There may be enough business, but there are also enough businesses to pick up the slack if a business wants to forgo income from not being open.

This is about government dictating to businesses how they operate. This is the textbook definition of fascism: government control of industry.

Since we don’t use the thruway and no longer patronize CFA, we don’t have a dog in this hunt.

Not if they have contracts on state-owned, limited access, highways, which I take this to be.

But isn’t this on limited-access highways on state-owned land?

This isn’t about forcing any regular restaurants to be open on Sundays.

Kinda fruitless to have a restaurant in a rest area if you know it will be closed on one of the busiest travel days

Maybe they can offer a free shoe shine to black folks on Sundays.

In a small town where I own rental properties about 25 minutes away, they are proposing all sorts of rules and regs for food trucks. I’m sure that NYS would legislate food trucks away at the rest stops as well.

I am certainly no fan of Chick-fil-A particularly after the principal executive endorsed BLM. However, you must ask the question: would members of the New York legislature business had a travel plaza on a toll road that closed for the Muslim or Jewish sabbaths?

Why not 24/7 for all restaurants if convenience is reason?
