Well said. You need to take some responsibility for yourself. Social Security is a “safety net” and nothing more. It was never to support a lavish lifestyle.
If folks don’t like this COLA adjustment, wait until the funds run dry and they can only support 70 some percent of full payments. No one wants or dares to honestly discuss that “kick the financial can” problem until it can’t be ignored.
Some of us have fat private pensions :)
I took SS at 62 because I’m pretty sure , given my medical condition, that I’m not going to get it for very long.
When gov gives $5000, plus a phone, plus housing them.. to every illegal who never paid taxes into the country.
When gov gives millions.. Billions.. To countries we have no obligation
...social security is giving money to seniors who did pay taxes all their lives and who gave and served.
“you can bet your property taxes will go up more than 3%.”
Sure did. 14% in my county.
14%! Wow! Where? Could you sell and move somewhere cheaper?
From what fund did the billion dollar hand out via $5000 to each illegal entering our borders... I object to anything gov does to make it more inviting for whomever, to come to our open borders. Our country belongs to us.. Gov is willfully destroying the United States of America
You hit the nail on the head. We need to look after our own communities. We need to look after our own people. Relations or not, it’s what is right by God.
It’s rural Kansas, housing doesn’t get much cheaper. Well, maybe East Cleveland...
Common advice to postpone taking benefits to receive a higher benefit is not
“highly suspect” as you say.
It makes perfect sense for some - me for instance.
Doesn’t make sense for some others.
It’s an easy calculation to see how long you have to live to catch up.
Factor in the taxes you would have paid on the early benefits and what you could have earned on the money - it’s all there - do the computations.
It works or it doesn’t.
Are other taxes low? Sales taxes? Income taxes?
Virginia uses all three, each of them low(ish), but combined probably about the same cumulative amount.
I only get a relatively low figure SS payment. Turns out the medicare increase wipes out 3.2 % COLA so take home will stay about the same.
The property tax is low, so the 14% is another $300 a year. sales tax about 8.5%, income tax moderate. I sold my little ant farm on Long Island and moved out here. I got twice the house for half the price. I can’t complain too much. It’s way better than New York.
I started taking my private pension at 60 as there was no incentive. To wait, just miss payments. Still working and closing n on 67,, will work until at least 70 to maximize amount for m wife who did not work outside th home. If I start taking the amount I qualify for today, at least I wouldn’t be paying back one in three dollars because I’m still working, but with the SS being taxed at a higher bracket it’s simply best to wait until 70. Due to job loss we had to use up our savings and thankfully have a job now that I can work for a few more years. The fixed private pension is worth less every year and will never increase.
Ok. That makes more sense now. FReegards!
(3.2 is an insult with this inflation)
Thank you

The dirt simple answer is that the gov’t taxed me to get the SS money for other people all of my life...
That’s a very salient point: that money was stolen from us for the time we worked . It is NOT gov. giving us anything. It is our money they took.
HAD it been invested, etc. the amount would far exceed what we get back. Now, would that have happened with each and every recipient? Probably not but then the onus would be solely on them.
As it is we are at the mercy of stupid government creating economic chaos out of their misguided policies.
Inflation is eating away at nest eggs at a ridiculous pace. So yeah, a few percent increase seems paltry and doomed to put old folks further behind.
I notice the undercurrents too. The poor are stupid, they're dependent on government so they're probably Democrats so they're greedy and evil too. Scrooge recommended they die and decrease the surplus population.

One of the reasons why Trump won is because he didn’t have this “trickle-down” attitude to blue collar America.
