Chinese hackers are positioning themselves inside critical US infrastructure by targeting careless office workers in a bid to cause 'societal chaos' from within should war break out.
Beijing's military have burrowed into more than 20 major suppliers in the last year alone including a water utility in Hawaii, a major West Coast port and at least one oil and gas pipeline, analysts have revealed.
They have bypassed elaborate cyber security systems by intercepting passwords and log-ins unguarded by junior employees, leaving China 'sitting on a stockpile of strategic' vulnerabilities.
Codenamed Volt Typhoon, the project has coincided with growing tension over Taiwan and could unplug US efforts to protect its interests in the South China Sea.
'It is very clear that Chinese attempts to compromise critical infrastructure are in part to pre-position themselves to be able to disrupt or destroy that critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict,' said Brandon Wales of the DHS's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)

It isn’t hard to figure out the war China is practicing to fight against the U.S. During the first few hours of a war against the U.S. China will launch massive cyberattacks to take down for months the electric grid, water systems, banking systems, communication systems, and key computer networks critical for the operation of our 21st century technology enabled society. Plus already proven anti satellite weapons systems will take out our military spy, GOS, and communications systems. A trade embargo will be implemented meaning no Chinese manufactured goods will be sent to the U.S.
Without technology enabled systems and networks the U.S. economy will immediately grind to a halt. Particularly in urban areas. Law and order will break down and stores stripped of goods. Supply chains will stop functioning and people will be starving within a week. No food, no clean water, no electricity, no money, no heat, no transportation, no phone communication, no medical care. Barbarism will reign in the homeland as desperate people forage for food and try to defend themselves. Millions of US citizens will die of starvation or be killed by desperate bands of scavengers. The destruction of the homeland will take place without one Chinese soldier landing on US soil or one Chinese aircraft bombing a U.S. city.

Well, you're right - but we can't spend the money to prepare for the worst because thugs and WOKE goons in the CIA are thrill seeking psychopaths who want to drama the world knowing who has a mistress and who can be flipped (at great costs). Look up “fifth column” to understand what the Chinese are doing.
They have been using western money for fifty years to infiltrate our government and institutions.
Intercepted passwords are a fleeting vulnerability.
In important parts of a system most utilities will require users to change their passwords every 20 days at a minimum.
Access to different areas on the systems is compartmentalized with different passwords to different systems and reuse of passwords restricted.
If employees are following cyber security guidelines the hacker’s access should be relatively short lived. By this kind of hack anyway.
What I find more worrying is that China is the primary supplier of large transformers all of which today are computer controlled.
And the software on these critical pieces of infrastructure I have no doubt have back doors built in to the software for the Chinese Army to take control.
They are warning us. They can take us down in a minute.

The Chinese could put a back door in the firm ware if they want.
I would not be surprised if there are multiple backdoors in case one is discovered.

The Wall Street Journal, Jan 31, 2024, has a similar article on this Chinese government unit that is hacking and placing cyber bombs in critical networks throughout the U.S. This amounts to an act of war, but we have done little to stop this, and have not done enough to harden our networks against disruptions.
