Nearly 80 percent of all grades given to undergraduates at Yale last academic year were A’s or A minuses, part of a sharp increase that began during the coronavirus pandemic and appears to have stuck, according to a new report.
The mean grade point average was 3.7 out of 4.0, also an increase over prepandemic years.
The findings have frustrated some students, alumni and professors. What does excellence mean at Yale, they wonder, if most students get the equivalent of “excellent” in almost every class?
“When we act as though virtually everything that gets turned in is some kind of A — where A is supposedly meaning ‘excellent work’ — we are simply being dishonest to our students,” said Shelly Kagan, a Yale philosophy professor known for being a tough grader.
The trend has scrambled the very meaning of grades themselves, he said. Students no longer think B means “good.” An A is the new normal.

The argument could easily be made that anyone stupid enough to attend college is a bad risk on every level.
Grades don’t matter.
Being admitted to Yale and graduating from Yale signals that you are Regime compliant and a Globohomo loyalist.

No. In the circles where it carries weight, it still carries weight.
Two weeks to flatten the curve!

Our daughter goes to Private High School.
She recently showed me her midterm report card.

I immediately said English 3?
She said the teacher is new.
I completely accepted that.
Her English is way above 3.
Worked at a placement firm (head-hunter) about 25 years ago, interviewed 2 people from Yale, dumb as rocks.

Seems almost like having a sheep skin from any of the ivy league schools any more only means you have a sheep skin from an ivy league school. i.e. joy reid. Just sayin’.
Kids don’t get sent there to learn ... they get sent to make connections ...
Then it was still a meritocracy. God help us now.
Yay for A’s.
Nearly Everyone Gets A’s at Yale
Canada speak not grades
Keeps the parents sending in the tuition money.
The value of any Ivy education is devalued because the students have been dumbed down by lower admission standards
Back in the day, it was totally normal for a large percentage of Yale students to get As because a pretty large percentage of them had never gotten anything less than an A in their lives.
When you have an entire class with a history of GPA above 4 it’s not unusual to have a high percentage of A grades
Nowadays it’s a lot different because of the admission standards that emphasized diversity and affirmative action admits do 80% A is grade inflation.
FWIW, rumor has it that when Chelsea Clinton was at Stanford, the liberal Democrat profs were falling all over themselves at competing to see how much favoritism they could give her
