A study unveils the link between musical preferences and our inner moral compass
Science Daily ^

...

The study involved an existing dataset of over 1,400 participants who completed psychometric questionnaires assessing their moral values and provided information about their favorite artists through Facebook Page Likes.

The researchers then extracted acoustic and lyrical features from the top five songs of each participant's preferred artists.

Using ML algorithms, the team analysed the extracted features to predict participants' moral values.

Various text processing techniques, including lexicon-based methods and BERT-based embeddings, were employed to analyze narrative, moral values, sentiment, and emotions in lyrics.

Additionally, low- and high-level audio features provided via Spotify's API were used to understand encoded information in participants' musical choices, enhancing moral inferences.

The results demonstrated that a combination of lyrical and audio features outperformed basic demographic information in predicting individuals' moral compass.

Specifically, musical elements like pitch and timbre emerged as crucial predictors for values of Care and Fairness, while sentiments and emotions expressed in lyrics were more effective in predicting traits of Loyalty, Authority, and Purity.

"Our findings reveal that music is not merely a source of entertainment or aesthetic pleasure; it is also a powerful medium that reflects and shapes our moral sensibilities," remarked Vjosa Preniqi, lead author of the study and a PhD student in Queen Mary's Centre for Doctoral Training in Data-informed Audience-centric Media Engineering.

"By understanding this connection, we can open up new avenues for music-based interventions that promote positive moral development."

The study's implications extend beyond mere academic curiosity, holding the potential to impact how we engage with and utilise music in diverse aspects of life.

"Our breakthrough can pave the way for applications ranging from personalised music experiences to innovative music therapy and communication campaigns," commented Dr Kyriaki Kalimeri, senior co-author of the study and researcher at ISI Foundation.

I tried it in it’s early days and told it I like Petra, Mylon, Barren Cross, and Whitecross.

FTA
music is “a powerful medium that reflects and shapes our moral sensibilities”
I agree with that to a degree. Also, the adolescent brain is possibly susceptible to many subliminal forces.
And then there is the “where do you spend your time” aspect. It is no wonder that lyrics going around in one’s head would influence behavior.

Probably yes., as compared to David of Israel (Psalm 19:7-11 The Law, the Statutes, the Fear of he Lord), Bernard of Clairvaux (O Sacred Head, Now Wounded), Johann Bach (Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring), Isaac Watts (Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed), or P. P. Bliss (Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy); Just very broadly skimming the ever-nourishimg eons of music agreeable to the holy person’s ear and soul.

And in the 1940s, "White Christmas" from the Broadway hit "Holiday Inn"; a song that my school classes sang in the years of the Second World War, while we had personally known local service members fighting to their wounds and death in the Southern Pacific, with our little hearts grieving for them.

The song written by the great tunesmith Irving Berlin, released on July 30, 1942 just before the Marines landed on Guadalcanal to stop and reverse the Japanese advance. My enrollment in the first grade of our country school had begun. Songs sung and prayers were offered at the beginning of every school day,led by our teacher.

There was no piano. Everyone learned to sing accurately, on tune, no preachers or denominational demarcations present at all. All hearts were together in unity, begun with the Salute, arms raised, to our beloved Flag of the United States of America.

Our nation is now at the decision point because no one born after the conclusion of that conflagration can even begin to understand what happened then, with the whole populace united behind our united effort to overcome the Satanic forces behind the Axis tyrants (and yes, the Stalinist Communists as well).

And those were the years that I first recognized how much I loved our girls, with Ramona Strickland of my class leading them all, actually dreaming of her! That was my kind of America.

The reason is that their musical creations were/are timeless, of another spiritual dimension of which eternity is the dominant factor.

Brought up on Glenn Miller and Johnny Cash. Pianist and Cellist in grade and high school. Got into Yello and the Monkies. Hated the Beatles. Love bass and tenor singers. Some of the eighties music was ok. Listen to Jazz and Tiesto now. Classical now and then.

Why did you bother to post this? How does it relate to the topic? You might consider some explanation next time. Otherwise, a lot of us are in the dark.

And I completely ignore the semantics of vocals since I can’t understand most of them and don’t care what they say anyway. Whereas, to my gf, lyrics are the “main thing”.

No, some of us do not spend a lot of time watching movies.

So, what does “discussing Michael Bolton” have to do with the topic at hand?

Context is your friend.

The character of the Two Bobs relates to Bolton’s music. But you don’t really want to know. You just want to be pissy.
