I would expect he will not run for reelection , because having held the speaker job and then getting demoted as he was , that’s got to deflate his desire to remain in Congress.

But if he were to resign before the end of his term , then that creates a vacancy which narrows the GOP majority in Congress. I don’t know if a special election would be held to fill the remainder of his term if he were to resign soon.

Hanging around in Congress after getting removed as House Speaker is like a 12-time All-Star in Major League Baseball being asked to stay on the roster as a utility infielder as his skills fade. It just ain’t going to happen.

Constitution requires a special election to fill a vacant House seat. I believe the window is mostly 6 months until the next general. Vacancy that would last more than 6 months, special election required. Vacancy less than 6 months, it is possible to wait until next general.
