People act like Cromwell established a republic. What he did was take over the role of king.
If his kid had not been a total failure it might have worked.
But it would have still been a monarchy.
Of course I am of the opinion that the Stanleys would have been a smarter choice then the Stuarts. Bringing in a non-English monarch was not a wise move. Unlike the Stuarts the Hanovers did adopt the British culture even if it took a few generations. Which is why they kept the throne while the Stuarts got thrown out twice.
