Charleston Elects Republican Mayor for First Time Since 1870s

The city of Charleston this week elected a Republican mayor for the first time since the mid-1870s, signifying a new chapter for the centuries-old southern city.

The new mayor, William Cogswell, a former state representative and real estate developer, won a tight runoff election on Tuesday in South Carolina against Mayor John Tecklenburg, a Democrat who was seeking his third term in office.

Mr. Cogswell’s election indicates a shift for Charleston, a stubbornly left-leaning city that has consistently elected Democratic mayors — including one to 10 terms — even as the state as a whole has not voted for a Democratic president since 1976.

I thought his opponent would have been Mr. Spacely.

Evidently Charleston has had enough.

C’mon, Baltimore-You’re next. The last Republican was in 1967. DC? (never) Chicago? (1931) Detroit? (1962)

There are many colleges within Charleston. Lots of college students. Lots of college girls. One of my favorite activities in Charleston is to admire the girls shopping on King St. It is a sight to behold.

This, you see, isn’t an important election and is not indicative of any underlining problems for the party because....Democrats lost. Funny how that always works out.

I didn't bother to check, but i'm betting that when a Republican was elected there in the 1870s, South Carolina was still being occupied by Federal Troops, white people weren't allowed to vote, and everyone put in power was a puppet of the corrupt central government in Washington DC.

And Republicans were the liberals back in those days.

Not a chance. Look at the demographics.

What we term as left vs. right today really didn’t come into being until about 1896. Both parties had wide-ranging ideologies, even in the 1870s. Blacks made up the bulk of the voters in Charleston at that point before the Dems began to disenfranchise them later in the decade, doing so almost entirely by 1900. Absent that disenfranchisement, South Carolina would’ve been sending Black Republican Congressmen from the Charleston and interior areas until at least the 1960s.

The difference for Charleston is that it has been annexing further and further out into the White suburbs. It’s doubled its rather insular population since the 1970s/80s. Had it not done so, the Dems wouldn’t have lost this race.

Conversely, all those other cities are mostly Black (although DC has been getting more White since the ‘90s) or non-White and have been in population free-fall for years (except DC) Until the Blacks wake up to realize they’ve been used by the political left and return to their pre-1960 voting habits, things won’t change.

I haven’t been to Charleston in years, only a couple of hours away.

Can never come up with a reason to go.

I think I might know one person there.
