"Astronomer Mia de los Reyes of Amherst College in Massachusetts expressed this viewpoint in the journal APS Physics, noting Magellan’s acts allegedly committed on 'indigenous populations' during his 1519 voyage.
The latest move is said to have been inspired significantly by the Marxist Black Lives Matter protests."
Why not name them the Large and Small George Floyd Clouds and be done with it.

Astronomers have advocated for a renaming of two galaxies, currently named the Large and Small Megellanic Clouds after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, due to his record of “violent colonialism".No. Shut up and get the f*** outta my sight.

"Opposition to the current naming system is also backed by Professor David Hogg (different David Hogg, we checked) of New York University, who said the clouds were not discovered by Magellan and were only named after him in the 19th century."
This keeps up, no one will want their kid named David Hogg....

Maybe they can name them after the Philippine cannibals that killed Magellan.

When this stupid unaccomplished little twat “Mia” does something on a par with Ferdinand Magellan’s circumnavigation of the world ...
She’ll still be a stupid little twat whom we should ignore.

I’ll bet it wouldn’t take much research to find some historical figures named de los Reyes who did some things that wouldn’t be acceptable by 21st-century woke standards. When is Mia de los Reyes going to change her name?
To: Bon of Babble
Mia, STOP WITH THIS BS! Why don’t you do some research and contribute something useful on the topic of astronomy?

Well, the Milky Way is named after a candy bar and sets a very poor example.
We should rename it to something healthier like Bacon or Ribeye.
Unless it was named after lactating breasts and then maybe it’s okay.

“...allegedly committed on ‘indigenous populations’ during his 1519 voyage.”
Given that the ‘indigenous populations’ killed him in what is now the Philippines, I’d say any score was pretty much settled. I am not aware of any ‘colonies’ established by Magellan.

Ironically, with our current levels of literacy and education most of the woke public likely has no idea who Magellan was.
To: Bon of Babble
No.
George Floyd is not on record as having made any comments endorsing the LGBTQ+ community. So nominating him would be “problematic.”
You know this is the next step in the renaming process.
Everyone has dark corners in their lives where their behavior - even centuries later - might offend this group or that. The acclaimed personages of today might, in a distant future time, be discovered to have offended the sensibilities of easily aggrieved snow flakes triggering complaints. To avoid this complication, the only effective counter is to demand that nothing be named after any human being, living or dead, no matter how distinguished or meritorious.
