HOUSTON (KTRK) - A Texas man with prior run-ins with the law is being hailed as a hero after he found himself in the middle of a freeway shootout and risked his life to help pull an injured officer to safety.

John Lally was driving on Houston’s Southwest Freeway around 10 a.m. Saturday when he found himself in the middle of a shootout between a carjacking suspect and multiple police officers. He saw one of the officers, identified as 29-year-old Officer J. Gibson, get shot and didn’t think twice before rushing to the rescue.

“I just kind of ran over there and grabbed that guy with the other police officer… We grabbed him by his vest and dragged him behind the truck. And I kind of tucked him underneath the truck, so he wouldn’t get shot again,” Lally said.

Lally documented the entire ordeal on video, which shows bullets flying past him as he dragged Gibson across the freeway. Lally then stayed with Gibson, trying his best to provide some comfort as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

It was a drastic turn of events for Lally, who has had multiple prior run-ins with law enforcement.

Final line of the article:

Police say the carjacking suspect died at the hospital from injuries he sustained in the shootout.

< sigh >

Another life wasted by his own bad decisions.

The level of surprise would depend on the type of “run in with the law” I think.

Was this a career criminal or someone who got arrested for smoking in the park and jaywalking?

I just saw a video of Hamas getting bombed and thee were a dozen or so Palestinian men running across the screen, each one of them holding their phones taking videos, ugh.

Counterintuitive though it is, the average jailbird would be far more likely to intervene to help a cop in distress that than the average person.
It’s a weird phenomenon but it’s very real.

And the way he ignored flying bullets and dragged him to safety and found a protected spot for him.... reminds me of Navy Corpsmen. When Marines don’t want to move from behind that rock or log, Corpsmen run out there with complete disregard for their own life. As a Marine, I cannot understand how the Navy selects or trains them to switch off the “I want to stay alive” switch.

Or was he just young and stupid? People do occasionally straighten themselves out.

But don't you love a news story with a happy ending?

Yeah, you’re right. I remember the first time I heard anything similar to this about a famous leader of the French Revolution: he claimed to love people but shuddered at a human touch (totally paraphrased!). I always remembered that bit about his shuddering, it really completes the description of this phenomenon.
