A child psychiatrist was jailed Wednesday for the production, possession, and transportation of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including the use of web-based artificial intelligence software to create pornographic images of minors.
The prosecutors in North Carolina said David Tatum, 41, found guilty by a jury in May, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison and 30 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $99,000 in restitution.
"As a child psychiatrist, Tatum knew the damaging, long-lasting impact sexual exploitation has on the wellbeing of victimized children," said US Attorney Dena J. King in a statement. "Regardless, he engaged in the depraved practice of using secret recordings of his victims to create illicit images and videos of them."
"Tatum also misused artificial intelligence in the worst possible way: to victimize children," said King, adding that her office is committed to prosecuting those who exploit technology to harm children.

We all have to wonder if with the current state of technology, someone can externally put these images (that are illegal) on one’s PC remotely. Then just how do they catch one? Are ISP’s involved ? Are search warrants used or do they just remotely get the evidence as they see fit ?
This stuff could be used to easily frame your enemies.
I thought I read somewhere that the courts have ruled that “artificial” (my word) kiddie porn isn’t illegal...just “genuine” (my word).
Who knows what is on your p.c.
Every browser maintains a cache of every downloaded.
You could accidentally hit a webpage with porn and quickly back out, but the entire page will be cached IN YOUR P.C.
Very dangerous world we browse in.
Bingo.
I seem to recall the same.
Perhaps the dividing line, using images of real children, to create porn makes this instance a legally recognized crime?
Either way it’s pretty damn sick...but not unexpected for a psychiatrist.
Would that be a thought crime..... 🧐
I heard that as well. Terrible lawyer I guess. Although he’s still a creep.
Any form of this is wrong, but I thought there was a big issue a while back where they determined cartoons or other drawn art would not be considered porn. Only actual photographic images qualified, and simple nudity did not qualify. I thought some things changed when parents were being investigated over the classic “bear rug” naked image of their little baby.
No- an actual crime if he used photos of actual kids to create it with- he made victims out of the kids and caused them trauma
This is a very slippery slope. If they use public revulsion over child pornography to start inventing crimes against victims. who don’t even exist, it won’t be long before they start prosecuting people for social media posts that “hurt the feelings” of government officials. And, as you say, planting evidence against the politically troublesome - which it looks like they have already been doing for some time now.
Yes to both.
We live in a very strange world. Even if you have photographic/video evidence of someone committing a crime, they can claim it’s a deepfake.
How many of those categories does he fit into aside from the pedo?
If AI is so ‘smart’, why doesn’t it prevent this?
Wouldn’t that depend on the AI’s goals?
Deep fake porn it seems, at the very least, would be libelous.
Exactly! AI has no ‘intelligence’. It’s simply software with extensive network search capability that obeys the structure of its programmers. It has no morality, ingenuity, or free-thinking of its own.
