Apollo astronaut Col. Frank Borman has died in Billings, Montana, NASA announced. He was 95.
“Today we remember one of NASA’s best. Astronaut Frank Borman was a true American hero. Among his many accomplishments, he served as the commander of the Apollo 8 mission, humanity’s first mission around the Moon in 1968,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson Thursday in a statement. “In addition to his critical role as commander of the Apollo 8 mission, he is a veteran of Gemini 7, spending 14 days in low-Earth orbit and conducting the first rendezvous in space, coming within a few feet of the Gemini 6 spacecraft.”
Borman died November 7, according to the statement.
In 1967, Borman was a member of the Apollo 204 review board, which investigated a fire that killed three astronauts on Apollo I, according to NASA’s short biography. Borman would later lead the team that reengineered the Apollo spacecraft.
Borman continued his aviation work following his NASA career as the CEO of Eastern Airlines, according to the statement.

RIP Frank Borman.
Poor guy like Frank Lorenzo after him, had to deal with Charlie Bryant as his Union goon nemesis at Eastern Airlines.
One of the greatest Americans. I still miss Niel.
The Greatest Generation
Well, I’ll be! Just last week, an 87 y/o former Astronaut died, just like that! He too was relatively unknown by the general public. Makes you wonder if something’s going on! (sarc)
One has to be of a certain age to know who he was. Current youths would have no idea. Borman Lovell Anders....Apollo 8 Christmas orbiting the moon
Frank Borman, Astronaut Who Led First Orbit of the Moon, Dies at 95
I'm of that age. I was 22 in 1969. My first born son was not quite 3 that year.
Thanks for posting. My son works at NASA. He usually beats me to the punch on space news.
Should have added he celebrated his 57th birthday yesterday. He was born on Election Day, November 8, 1966.
Apollo 8 was incredible, gutsy, bold, and on and on.
I’ve always admired you Colonel Borman .. may you rest in peace in the unknown beyond.
What a moving Christmas address to the people on Earth with visuals. I’ll never forget it.
That’s a real man….
He was an exemplar of the America I got to come of age in. i remember the coverage of his flights like it was yesterday. truly amazing and inspiring for a young teen. all of a sudden, the moon was right there. RIP and well done Col. Borman. God’s speed.

other than the ones that randomly showed up at my house wanting stuff.
RIP legend.
There are still 8 Apollo astronauts alive, Aldrin, Scott, Schmitt, Duke, Lovell, Anders, Stafford and Haise.
What a great and exciting time it was for our country because of men such as Frank Borman.
RIP.
