GOP takes control of Long Island with Ed Romaine’s landslide victory in Suffolk County executive race

Republicans painted Long Island completely red Tuesday night with the party’s candidate Ed Romaine winning a landslide victory against Democrat David Calone to become Suffolk County executive.

The GOP now occupies all the countywide seats in Nassau and Suffolk Counties — both county executive seats, the district attorney and comptroller’s offices, as well as all four congressional seats.

Romaine sailed to victory with 56% of the vote, beating Calone by more than 26,000 votes.

“This is a political earthquake,” said former US Sen. Al D’Amato.

Longtime analysts of Long Island politics said they could recall only one brief period in the last 60 years when the GOP was this dominant

“Long Island for now is defiantly returning to its red roots,” said Lawrence Levy, dean of Hofstra University’s National Center for Suburban Studies

I live in Suffolk... we always talk towards the soccer mom votes... apparently the quality of life and costs have finally forced them to abandon their leftist thinking temporarily...

As for Nassau, a large Jewish population exists in conjunction to soccer moms... my guess is both increased their support for GOP to some degree...

The battlefield is spiritual, not legal.

I know many would just say God wants abortion banned, but is that truly the case? Would God prefer it be legal, but no one gets one, or that it is illegal, and some break the law to have one? Is that not just an extension of biting the apple? Testing humanity?

This is a ‘hearts and minds’ issue, not a legal one. An outright ban is just dumb when women will go find the means if needed. During Prohibition it was illegal to buy and sell, but NOT to drink alcohol. How many addicted drug users are still in prison solely for use instead of dealing? Did that get people to stop using?

And for those who continue to speak for God here, let him handle who gets into Heaven. I doubt every woman who’s had an abortion has been sentenced to purgatory.

We fought for decades to get Roe overturned and now have to live with the voter’s preferences. I’m far more concerned with having to completely overhaul the educational system and the poison it infected the last 40 years.

Yep, but he is more moderate than most Dems. He was the DA who finally dropped the Duke Lacrosse charges. Built up a lot of goodwill back then. And besides Florida, North Carolina might well have been the state most emigrated to from the NY Metro area.

The Culture War has to focus on education far more than abortion.

We should be pushing how European countries handle it. On average, about 15 weeks. The best way to make the Left have to struggle is to force them to defend the worst.

We won the Partial Birth Abortion debate because it was so horrific to defend that they stopped trying to. I think it was truly THE sleeper reason Roe was gutted.

And any call to NOT make exceptions for Rape and Incest is such a losing position I can’t even fathom the stupidity.

It happened in the recent election in Poland, the ruling PiS had the most strict abortion law in Europe. The women came out in droves and voted them out.

Along with pot, It’s put on the ballot to drive young people to vote. Young people vote Democrat.. oldest trick in the book. This issue destroys our chances of winning seats. And we always fall for it.

One new thing I would support, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, is to fully fund elections with public money. No corporate giving nor individual giving to a Party or a candidate. Volunteer your time instead.

YouTube and Rumble are basically free (I use it for my lacrosse website to do a morning 15-minute show). Technology allows anyone (obviously there would be a need to protect ALL speech on the platforms) to cheaply run a campaign. DJT proved that can happen.

I truly believe that under this approach, you get far more substance and less BS out of a candidate’s mouth, and it takes away the lobbying that so badly distorts what bills are passed.

Take away the money flow and get back to policy and character. Citizens United was a DISASTER for us over the long run because their side has the billionaires that are so harmful and selfish.

I’m in the blue area of Mt Kisco, NY- democrats, who have run the town for decades, lost hard here in a local race for Mayor and trustees. All three rat incumbents went down
