AMMAN - Arab leaders on Saturday called for an immediate ceasefire in Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, pressing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to convince Israel, but the top US diplomat said such a halt right now would only allow Palestinian militant group Hamas to regroup and attack Israel again.
In a rare public disagreement at a news conference in Amman, the foreign ministers of Jordan and Egypt, standing alongside Mr Blinken, repeatedly pushed for a cessation of hostilities, saying the death of thousands of civilians could not be justified as self-defence.
They also refused to discuss in depth what comes next for Gaza, when and if Hamas is eradicated, saying the immediate focus should be on the effort to establish a cessation of hostilities.
Mr Blinken is on his second trip to the region since Israel and Hamas went to war on Oct 7, when the Islamist militant Palestinian group raided Israel from Gaza, in a rampage Israel says killed 1,400 people, with more than 240 others taken hostage.
Health officials in Hamas-run Gaza say more than 9,250 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since then. The Israeli army has struck Gaza from the air, imposed a siege and launched a ground assault, stirring global alarm at humanitarian conditions in the enclave. Food is scarce and medical services are collapsing.

Why do they think the USA can enforce a ceasefire anyway?
Of course, because the IDF will get annihilated in a ground war. That's why they're holding off and waiting for the U.S. to jump in.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said they would continue fighting until Hamas is elinimated. Then Israel will talk ceas fire.
Oh look, our Nazi rat. Are your talking points two weeks old? There is a ground war in Gaza right now. Gaza City is completely surrounded.
The Israelis are playing the long game, they’ve encirlced Gaza City. They’ve trapped thousands of Hamas there with no hope of escape. Its why terrorist sympathizers in the west and the Arab Nations are going nuts, because the Israelis aren’t rushing in like they always do.
Israel wants Gaza completely destroyed and its people moved so they can take over, as has been the plan since Hamas was created by Israel.
Then Israel will talk ceas fire.
See part #1.
The US should give military, humanitarian and moral support to Israel but should not tell them what to do, and stay away from these so-called diplomatic exchanges. Blinken will screw it up and make matters worse.
Isn’t this the opposite of what he said yesterday...and Israel told him to bug out.
Oh look, the adult video booth janitor.
Are your talking points two weeks old?
Nah, they're current. I refresh myself on the hour.
There is a ground war in Gaza right now.
No, there isn't. There are continuous air-strikes and US special forces, excusez-moi, "advisers" on the ground and waiting until the check clears from our BASED, MAGA AF! new Speaker to continue to fund Israel.
Gaza City is completely surrounded.
Until Hezbollah and Turkish forces get tagged in and jump off the top rope.
You are so past your “sell by” date.
Is Blinken in charge of Israeli foreign policy? That’s as crazy as Israel controlling U.S. foreign policy. Oh. Never mind.
No cease-fire! No appeasement of the Gaza devils. Not until every single hostage is released unharmed. And no relief supplies allowed in. Keep the electricity and water shut off. The only thing to be allowed in should be bomb drops to flatten Gaza.
Interesting way to say the pals won’t cease fire, why should the israelis?
Hey, Hamas, don’t start nothin’, won’t be nothin’. FAFO. Screw with the bull, get the horn. What don’t they understand?
BULL SHITE!
Self-defence is always justified.
Arab leaders want to stall time for Hamas to rearm and relocate for ambush.
