Well how many times have you struggled to find a gas station on the way to returning the car at the airport to fill up the tank?
It was a nightmare trying to do that in Miami.
Perhaps they should design the batteries to be more modular. That way they wouldn’t have to replace the entire battery pack for a ding.
As for charging times, this might help:
“Who would want to rent an EV when they are on a trip and need a reliable vehicle? “
I agree. For the typical use as a vacation vehicle, an EV makes zero sense.
I’ve said many times, the only rational use of an EV at the current time as an around-town vehicle that you’re charging at home when you’re asleep or not doing anything else. Otherwise, the inconvenience of finding chargers and wasting 45-90 minutes charging simply destroys the case for an EV. The overwhelming number of car rentals are for people away from home, and if someone need a temporary rental at home (e.g., due to your car being repaired or otherwise out of commission), an EV only makes sense if you already have the EV infrastructure at home.
“Well how many times have you struggled to find a gas station on the way to returning the car at the airport to fill up the tank?“
Never.
Get to the hotel early before all the chargers are filled and don’t go out and be left in the dark.
Trump right again!
If I rent an auto for a week in an unfamiliar part of the country, I don’t want to be searching for chargers every few days.
On a recent climbing trip our son was offered a Tesla for his rental, being interested in EVs he happily accepted a new fully charged Model 3.
He quickly picked up a friend and off they went, one driving and the other reading the manual looking for features to explore.
Young and mentally agile, not much of a hill for two climbers.
An unexpected high point of the trip.
That and they bagged a 5.10 onsite lead.
I’m sure that’s an issue at times.
There isn’t nearly enough infrastructure to support an all EV fleet. It’s a pipe dream of moron central planners and climate extremists, forget those who are doing this to control you, which some are. There isn’t enough generation capacity (needs nukes, and a lot of them), nor enough transmission and distribution capacity (look at the problems in TX and CA in recent years), nor enough materials mining and processing to support that EV fleet. But other than those small issues, it’s a great idea!
“one-and-done rides when they get into an accident?”
Rather ironic because the Dems are the party of “sustainability” and “Reduce, Recycle & Reuse.” They constantly harp on us to avoid “single-use plastic” (which I DO happen to abhor).
So now they want to push “single-use” cars on us? Even the cars that they jam down our throats are not “sustainable.”
There’s no hypocrite like a Democrat hypocrite.
And smaller and faster... EV's might be still be the future but the current technology's not there yet. Of course I remember when a new computer loaded with one blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner... and many of us bought them before they were really that useful and kept the dream going.
AI should be a big help with EV technology too...
Does that mean EVs will be fleeting?
There is usually a gas station at the entrance to the airport
I think your question is the crux of the problem in renting. Imagine you’re called for a short notice business trip somewhere and you’d like (maybe have to) to rent an EV. Your next problem is the logistics and surety of being able to recharge, where, when, how, how much, etc.
Frankly, that’s just too much of a hassle that I’d want to mess with in addition to all the other preplanning work for a business trip.
Maybe the Attorney General of the Stat of New York should sue Hertz for consumer fraud. I think the statute/s they have been trying to use on Trump would apply.
The public must realize that the very same people who forced them to wear masks and get the poke are the ones who are forcing EV’s on them.
dfwgater’s issue was a non issue.
US-based rental car company Hertz announced back in 2021 it was ordering 100,000 Tesla electric vehicles
My take, as an EV owner who thinks EV's can sell in the free market for some use cases:
Too
Eexpensive
Still
Liberals
Adore
My neighbor who is a big greenie, with solar, battery powered lawn tools, a PHEV car etc, was complaining that the rental company for his CA vacation was trying to push an EV on him. His thoughts were that he would not be able to go the places he wanted to go and do the things he wanted to do if stuck with limited range and extended charging times. Green only goes so far.
Weather you are traveling for business or pleasure, most people stay in hotels. Few if any hotels have EV chargers. I have done my fare share of both and I don't need the logical hassle of looking for a charging station and sitting there for 2 hours wile I'm trying do due business or have fun.
Uber would be a better solution but would likely cost more.
