Did he actually consider invading Turkey? I’ve heard such on History Channel (I don’t have cable any longer so I watch very little TV now). It would have been a smarter move than invading the Soviet Union, especially after waiting until June to do it.
Turkey had nothing Hitler wanted. Lebensraum - land as defined in “Mein Kampf” is east of Germany - Russia. Also an opportunity to destroy the Socialist rival - Communism was not to be missed.
Additionally Turkey was being courted to join the Axis since it was once an ally in WWI. It’s semi-Fascist Kemalist government was viewed as an ideological ally much as Franco’s Spain was. However both Turkey & Spain’s government adroitly walked that diplomatic tightrope and avoided WWII
