Politics aside, I think the answer is simple: Israel is preparing the battlefield. A standard tactic before a land assault is to launch a sustained artillery and air barrage on the enemy and his positions. Destroy as much infrastructure and kill as many troops as possible before committing your own forces. Given the anticipated intensity of ground combat in Gaza, Israel would be foolish to just rush their troops in without taking this crucial step.
The October 7th debacle should have been an eye-opener for every Israeli. If I lived there I would have absolutely zero confidence in my government to do anything right.
