VDH from Wiki- In 2004 he took early retirement in order to focus on his political writing and popular history. ... He was appointed Fellow in California Studies at the Claremont Institute, a conservative think-tank in California, in 2002. Hanson was appointed Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, another conservative think-tank in California. He was often the William Simon visiting professor at the School of Public Policy at Pepperdine University, a private Christian institution in California (2009–15), and was awarded in 2015 an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the graduate school at Pepperdine. He gave the Wriston Lecture in 2004 for the Manhattan Institute whose mission is to “develop and disseminate new ideas that foster greater economic choice and individual responsibility”. He has been a board member of the Bradley Foundation since 2015, and served on the HF Guggenheim Foundation board for over a decade.

You say, “Henry has been irrelevant for 50 years.” Not really. It is more like thirty years. His work in creating peace (the absence of war) between Egypt and Israel was certainly a work of art. With the first Bush he was cast aside.

"–the moral decay that now characterizes American higher education"

Exactly.

Makes you long for the days when college students were merely gulping goldfish and piling into graffiti-covered jalopies.

"University presidents do not condemn the hate-filled rallies supporting the killing of Jews"

We knew that, despite our attempts to drive a stake through the evil heart of naziism, it would raise its hideous head again--somewhere--somehow--but it was hard to imagine that it would be so blatant and so soon and in America of all places.

And yet--here it is.

Get your attics ready.

"Reform will only come through curtailing the government handouts that fuel multibillion dollar university endowments."

So the (apparently) insurmountable obstacle is government corruption? Probably so. Mutual back-scratching.

So what's the cure for government corruption?

It's probably due to contempt for truth--truth for its own sake--which has perverted the once-reliable free press into a crass political propaganda machine and once-open-minded academic leaders into indoctrinators--and which is the evil most fundamental to the decadence of Western Civilizaiton.

But there's something more fundamental than that. Yes. It's whatever has engendered and fostered contempt for truth in the people of Western Civilization.

What is that? I'm having a hard time recognizing it. Great Minds, help me to see what that is. This is a sincere request for help.

My suggestion is to force them to hold student loans of their own graduates in their endowment.

I must say that my two children and four grandchildren have (so far) resisted the indoctrination as has my son-in-law, and some live in incessantly, ubiquitously indoctrinated California.

I have told each of them this: "I do not want you to think what I think. I want you to decide for yourself what's right and wrong."

So far, they have done exactly that, and they have resisted the indoctrination.

Perhaps in this is the answer to my question (vide supra).

Perhaps in the exhortation to seek TRUTH--TRUTH for its own sake--wherever it should present itself--lay the admonition to resist un-TRUTH which includes indoctrination.

If so, the real challenge is instill the demand for TRUTH in the population.

That will threaten long cherished delusions.

People hate relinquishing their delusions.

“I don’t know why VDH has a negative view of Joseph McCarthy. It seems to me that history has shown that he was pretty much correct.”

Having lived through that era, I, a lifelong anti-communist, also have a negative view of McCarthy. His blathering led to not a single exposure of a communist. Moreover, his utterly baseless accusation that George Marshall was pro-communist marks him as one of American history’s worst false accusers.

Yes, the university needs to be a partner in student loans, but certainly not the American public. They have enough problems already. Perhaps I should have attended college back when I was of the age(MANY years ago)but I never did as there was no money for it, but I guess I could have done it through the military. Not quite what sure the college possibilities( financially speaking)were back in the 50s, but at least I might have gotten a decent education. I sure wouldn’t be interested now as a very senior citizen. It wouldn’t accomplish anything for me at this late date...and I can’t imagine being willing to put up with the crap it would almost surely present nowadays. I don’t understand any sane person wanting to attend many of the colleges that are available now...for many reasons.

One of the biggest improvements that could be made to the public system at the state level would be to remove the requirement for an education degree to teach at the K12 level. This would eliminate the need for that degree making the Colleges of Education redundant.

Make the requirement a 1-year teaching apprenticeship at a public school. Also push hiring down to the individual school level done by a committee of parents, teachers & head school administrator (principal).

Until we elect better people to high office...

I think we'll need better voters before this could happen.

I see none coming along.
