The events of Oct. 7 were shocking, not only for their sheer brutality, they for another reason: Hamas, with limited resources, and using simple methods, overran Israel's sophisticated border security system, and operated unchallenged for several hours, even after the fact that the invasion was clearly taking place.
The conglomeration of failures exceeds the explanation of mere hubris, or over-reliance on technology. The government’s failure to respond quickly to the situation, to engage the enemy with the full might of the IDF, and to issue statements to a troubled population – explaining what it was doing to bring the situation under control – are simply unprecedented and barely believable.
No restrictions on weapons, ammo or the building of strong holds. Yes, the government needs to do their normal job but the people will always be able to respond faster than the government because the people are THERE and do not have to be moved into position.
Will everybody?
Of course not.
But ten percent can slow down invaders long enough to prevent devastation while the government responds. And people will protect their neighbors. Don't attempt to stop them.
Repeat of 1973.
Only 2% of the people in Israel have guns. They are effectively banned.
It has always been true, that when seconds count, police are only minutes away.
These “Peace Ravers” and ultra Jewish liberals living next to the West Bank are simply the very people meant to be attacked. They did not allow anyone around with a weapon.
This is not a failure by the country. Instead, it is a failure of these victims to prepare or identify threats, and counter them.
They even had the murderers come in and work for them! What is the “country” to do when ultra liberals insist on becoming bait for the wicked, all while hating on those who wanted them to be better prepared and to not trust the Palestinian wolves?
Are you a proponent of Peace Raves, believing only a country’s police and army should be armed?
It was shocking to find out that the populace was pretty much disarmed.
Exactly, you are not going to stop them, but you are going to tie them up so that additional forces can be organized and deployed. It is a very old tactic for Civilizations fighting barbarians. Hard fortified node defense that slows downs and bleeds a raiding force until the response units can be organized and deployed. The Romans did it, the English against the Vikings. I sure there are hundred of other examples.
The current government would almost certainly be replaced by one to the Left. One that would put the country’s head even further into the noose of land for “peace” and submission to the Arabist Antisemites in Whitehall and Foggy Bottom. “Once Again” would replace “Never Again”.
Gun control always goes badly for those whose guns have been controlled.
Israel needs a written constitution first. This should have already been taken care of long ago. Next, it needs judicial reform. Again, this is a problem more complex that surface appearances inform. After that, the question of the ultra orthodox serving in the IDF needs to be address (if not addressed in the constitution). This is one of those thorns in the flesh that keeps the pot stirred. I have been a Bibi Netanyahu fan but he made a bad decision in going back on his word to form a coalition government with Beni Gantz. Together they would have had all the votes to tackle many of the things wrong in Israel that desperately need to be addressed. But he didn’t. I have no idea why. Citizens being armed is just one of a host of issues (who wouldn’t support that?). How coalition governments are formed in Israel is a nightmare. If you think Americans are divided you have no idea how it is in Israel - but this past year has further divided the country and caused leadership it to be needlessly distracted ending or greatly contributing to this horrible security failure. This will certainly be blamed on Netanyahu when/if the smoke all clears - but he is just one of many players. There’s plenty of blame to go around. The question now is, can the current ‘war government’ function effectively or at all. This is a multidimensional issue and so far there is no clear answer.
