As the 2023 Israel-Hamas war continued into its third day, and with the widely distributed and traumatic images of Hamas terrorists operating freely inside Israel fresh in their minds, some citizens began campaigns for a loosening of Israel’s gun ownership laws, to allow more residents to bear personal arms.
Relaxing Israel’s restrictive gun license laws has long been championed by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, as well as some libertarian-leaning right-wing politicians, but it is an issue that has not gained much traction, despite occasional reports of high-level discussions on the issue.
Gun control in Israel is relatively strict, and firearm licenses are generally only granted to those who can show a need for extra security in their line of work or daily life. Meaning, one of the key criteria for a private citizen to receive permission to own a gun is where they live.
That could now change, says Rabbi Raz Blizovsky, 32, of Katzrin, an activist who has been part of grassroots discussions around personal arms.
“People are changing their opinion, and now there is more awareness,” he told The Times of Israel. It doesn’t make sense, he said, that someone in Tel Aviv cannot get a pistol, but someone in the Golan can. “There are terror attacks in both places,” he stressed.
“It’s a pity this is happening the way it did,” he added, alluding to the recent devastating attack. “I have been involved with groups that have been talking about this issue for years. During calm times, people don’t do anything,” he said.

Repetitiveness gets tiresome, but man, for all the posts about how could Isralis be anti-gun of all people, I still want to keep asking that question, not for an answer but because I still find it so mind-blowing.

Will the Democrat voters in NY and the massholes in Boston vote against Democrats? And for that matter will Democrat voters everywhere vote Republican because they’ve seen the evils of gun control? Will the sun rise in the west? Of course not - answer to both question. Antigunners hate and fear freedom so much they’d rather be killed than admit their stupidity. One of the key distinguishing characteristics of democrat voters is their total inability to learn. No matter what aspect of the democrat platform is shown to be stupid, evil and Marxist fantasy, their voters bleat and vote Democrat again.
I feel the same way. Like many, I thought that Israelis could obtain, and were encouraged to carry firearms. I guess that isn’t the case.
I think a lot of people had the same misapprehension about this that I did.
Now we have video of Muslims going door to door and doing what they want inside those family homes.
Even being anti-gun you would think they would keep some rifles and shotguns at the house.
Purchasing the firearm is the simple, quick part. Learning how to effectively handle and use it is the harder part. Correct mindset and no hesitation is the hardest hurdle. Good luck!

I think only the Swiss have such laws/practices. I.e., every family is required to have a rifle, and required (or encouraged) to regularly practice with it. At least that is what I thought I heard years ago. I would've thought that Israel would've done the same.

5 HOURS before the IDF arrived in the South...far too late for hundreds killed, raped or abducted. If they were all armed they would have had a chance. Israel must enact universal gun ownership ASAP.
Muslims make up about 17.6% of the population of Israel according to Wikipedia. If you give everyone the right to own arms, you end the ability to limit that subset of the populace from becoming freelance terrorists.
That has always been my take on the matter.

Why would anyone want some ancient museum piece like that?! Especially in Israel. Hamas attacked with M4s left behind in Afghanistan and AK-47s. A Glock 17 holds 17 rounds. With two spare magazines that's 51 rounds. 52 rounds if you have one in the chamber, which Israelis apparently don't do. A Ruger Blackhawk is pretty much useless in a situation like that which occurred in Israel.
Not to mention the Israeli-made Magnum Research Desert Eagle.

Actually, since most Israelis serve in the armed forces, their average level of training is far higher than in the US.
Why?
