Staff and visitors fled in terror from the Chinese consulate in San Francisco after a suspected armed attacker crashed into its lobby and was shot dead by police.

The driver said 'where's the CCP' (Chinese Communist Party) as he emerged bleeding from the blue Honda sedan and was grabbed by guards just after 3pm Pacific time.

He was shot when police arrived moments later and was declared dead after being taken to hospital.

He claimed to be holding bombs. He was not, and was taken in by police. Was at the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles.

That reads as if the consular guards held the driver just long enough for San Francisco police to show up and shoot him.

let me add to the confusion.

Consulates and embassies are usually guarded outside the gate by local police or the army of the host country. Inside the gate the country that occupies the embassy is responsible.

My son was a Marine Security Guard at US embassies in Honduras and Jordan. That’s my source

I interpreted it as the embassy guards grabbed the driver and held him while the police exectued him. Another Pulitzer prize, comin’ up.

Being that this was San Francisco, the driver likely meant no harm to the CCP, but just wanted to ask about pay and benefits...
