On Wednesday, leading Republican presidential candidate and 45th President Donald Trump spoke about the prospect of him potentially becoming speaker of the House after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and his allies ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the role for the first time in American history.
Trump, who is currently sitting in court for his New York fraud case, spoke to reporters outside of the courtroom where he agreed that he could step in to help the Republican Party if needed. The speaker of the House does not need to be a sitting representative in order to serve.
"A lot of people have been calling me about speaker. All I can say is that we will do what is best for the country and for the Republican Party," he said. "We have some great, great people."
When asked if he would take the job, Trump responded, "A lot of people have asked me about it. Look, I'm focused and I'm leading by 50 points for president. My focus is totally on that. If I can help them during the process, I would do it. But we have some great people in the Republican Party."
Trump has been nominated to be speaker by a number of GOP members including Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) who wrote, "Kevin McCarthy will NOT be running again as Speaker. I nominate Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the House."
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has also come out in support of President Trump, writing, "I’m supporting President Donald J. Trump to be the next Speaker of the House! He has a proven four-year record of putting America First and implementing the policies the American people want. President Trump is the man for the job!"
While some members have seen Trump as a potential alternative to a current House member, a number of names have begun circulating to take the gavel.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Rep. Jim Jordan, the current chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, announced that he would be pursuing the speakership following Rep. Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) ouster from the post by eight Republican rebels led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
Jordan, who is a member of the Freedom Caucus, told reporters that he would be running for the leadership post as multiple members consider the position, particularly Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA).
Jordan spoke in favor of Speaker McCarthy during the vote to vacate the chair and is seen as a strong McCarthy ally while simultaneously being a strong conservative.
The Freedom Caucus member has already seen some support from his GOP colleagues while others have yet to make their allegiances clear including conservative stalwart Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) who said, "Jim is a friend, and I certainly think he brings a whole lot that this conference would be able to rally around, but we've got to all have a conversation and I'm not going to say who I'm supporting at this point. We're going to figure this out behind closed doors as a family."
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has already come out in support of a potential Speaker Jordan, writing on X/Twitter, "I support Jim Jordan for Speaker."
Matt Gaetz also motioned that he would support Jordan in his attempt to get the gavel, writing, "My mentor Jim Jordan would be great!"
While it is unlikely that President Trump will be the next speaker of the House, his influence will play a strong role in determining who will lead the lower chamber.
Good and clear. But does he endorse anyone? And who all is currently in nomination?
Cletus D. Yokel for Speaker!
Better than most of the alternatives.
Democrat and Presstitutes heads are exploding as we speak... I LOVE IT!
What was clear about his response? He did not say he would do it if they elected him and he did not say he did not want to do it.
“A lot of people have been calling me about speaker. All I can say is that we will do what is best for the country and for the Republican Party,” he said. “We have some great, great people.”
When asked if he would take the job, Trump responded, “A lot of people have asked me about it. Look, I’m focused and I’m leading by 50 points for president. My focus is totally on that. If I can help them during the process, I would do it. But we have some great people in the Republican Party.”
Well, I think Trump is coming along as a politician. He just gave a state of non-denial, a true politician vocabulary. That takes practice.
I would love to see him be the speaker at least until he takes the presidency!
It puts him directly in the line of succession after knees up.
Those elitist pigs in that cursed building didn’t accept McCarthy - What makes anyone think they’ll work with Trump?
He said he was asked, and if he says he was asked by any of the current legislative pigs then we all know it’s a trap.
I’m pretty sure he was asked by a bunch of people, but don’t let the media tell people that he was approached by any GOP group or official. It’s a trap.
Every boomer I know has been calling me on this. They are all under the illusion that he has actually been asked to be in the running.
Sounds great MTG, why in hell didn’t you hold your pal McCarthy to that same standard?
Nice non-answer. He may or may not have the votes to actually accomplish it, and it would definitely interfere with a Presidential campaign, but the potential has got to make some proggie heads asplode, at least for a little while. A House that can’t spend money in the meantime is a House that can’t waste it.
Lee Zeldin.
It sounds like Trump would take it but is not lobbying for it. DO IT!
You have my vote
his plate is pretty full
i think he politely declined
his participation will be an endorsement
Thanks for the Trump support, but it ain’t happening.
I don't think he yet has a good grasp of the potential people vying for the job.
I believe it's also quite possible he does not want to torque off the eight handmaidens that voted with Democrats to remove McCarthy.
His response was fairly clear at least to me.
He said there are a lot of good people in the Republican Party. This means he doesn’t really see a need for him to take it on. Let others do it and he is a bit busy running for President and trying to dodge prison.
He didn’t rule it out because he has always loved media attention. More buzz can’t hurt him in his run for President.
“Nice non-answer.”
Yup. He didn’t clear up one thing. He might take it, or he might not.
“I’m pretty sure he was asked by a bunch of people, but don’t let the media tell people that he was approached by any GOP group or official. It’s a trap.”

A trap?
Trump as Speaker, NOW, would be EPIC, and one heck of a show.
“Trump has been nominated to be speaker by a number of GOP members including Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX)” (From the article...)
I guess he doesn’t need to be approached, if he’s already been nominated.
A trap indeed.
ALL of those GOP elites that have stood corruptly silent in the face of the theft of our country, WOULD BE TRAPPED with their leftist partners in crime, under the Speaker of the House [THEY] most deserve.
Will enough congress critters repent of their dereliction of duty to the Nation to make this happen? Wouldn’t THAT be something!
Jorden would be good. But Trump just because it would make the collective left spaz, $h!t and p!$$ all at once.
