If you’re kicking yourself for missing the historic moment of a House speaker’s ouster Tuesday because you had to work or get your kids from school, relax: We watched, and all it boiled down to was hot air — sound and fury, signifying nothing except cynical nihilism and likely weeks of chaotic paralysis.
Oh, Rep. Matt Gaetz and his fellow rebels talked plenty about high principle and the crisis of the Republic, but all they were really doing was burning down the House, or at least the House Republican majority.
Professed conservative hardliner Gaetz got the chaos he wanted, ironically thanks to the unanimous support of House Democrats, who joined the tiny GOP Suicide Squad...
Dems, of course, are reveling in the dysfunctional circus — and will presumably try to spin it out for as long as possible...
No one knows what comes next: The rebels have no candidate for speaker, let alone a plan for keeping the party’s most moderate members from turning to the Democrats in desperation for a return to regular order.
Gaetz and his allies didn’t take a bold stand for anything but self-indulgent nihilism — they were mad at how things have been going, so they blew everything up.
The reality remains that the Dems control the White House and the Senate, so the Republicans in Congress are unable to get much done, let alone realize the demands knocking about in Gaetz’s wildest dreams.
This arson no doubt feels good, like you’ve at last done something — just like punching a wall.
Then your hand starts to hurt and you realize that that’s all you’ve achieved...
Also up in the air: What Republican would even want the speaker’s job, so long as it means being held hostage by Gaetz and his crew?

So much for those investigations into the Biden Crime Family...
“Gaetz is the Republican In Name Only”
Right. He is an America First Conservative.
“McCarthy is the true Republican”
Right. These days, “true Republicans” are reprehensible globalists.
“McCarthy proposed a temporary spending bill that would have cut spending and secured the border, but idiots like Gaetz opposed it.”
Really? His speech on the floor contradicts your assertion. Let’s assume you are correct, so why did Gaetz move forward to vacate?
Why did not McCarthy just step up, show leadership and throw some real red meat, not the rubber kind, to these “no longer business as usual” Republicans? Something else is going on that none of us know about.
Wow, this what it sounds like when RINOs cry.
Exactly. Gaetz accomplished nothing. Just chaos.
Terrible editorial, completely misses the target.
Oh, don't worry! You'll get changes! Instead of a Republican House, Dem Senate and Dem WH, you'll have the Dems in charge of all three! Congrats on your amazing strategy! Morons.
CIB-173RDABN wrote: “I don’t know enough to know who will become the new speaker, but I suspect whoever it is will always keep in mind that if you stray to far in accommodating the other side, your side may yank you back.”
Only eight republicans voted to vacate, hardly the ‘other side’. In fact, one might say those eight were indistinguishable from the democrats.
The Post Editorial Board (PEB) is a venerable group of people who lay claim to some degree of conservatism but it doesn’t seem like I ever see much of it.
Gaetz, MTG and Lauren Boebert are the ONLY people in DC willing to put their tail on the line and shake things up and END Omnibus Theft. Gingrich should consider that millions of solid, responsible, conservative people, at this point, would just as soon bulldoze Washington D.C. and START the F OVER!
Omnibus governance must END. If that means the Capitol Bldg is burning (PEB’s words) then so be it.
This already IS their campaign strategy.
Calm down buck wheat. The Repubican decided the best course of action was to take a week off. It’ll be ok.
I love the taste of RINO tears in the morning.
“Sure, but the reality is that Repubs only controlled 1/3 of the government and even that was tenuous.”
That was Boehner’s excuse as well and it’s a fallacy.
The House holds ENORMOUS power, which they haven’t been using. Both the Senate and the Executive haven’t wanted the House to use its power of the purse to limit the scope of the Federal bureaucracy, or to set the limits on spending, which is within its power.
But you have to have somebody that actually DISAGREES with the Senate and the Executive’s point of view that spending ALWAYS has to go up.
And it’s nonsense.
But the Democrats always have their ace in the hole, the Establishment RINO Republicans who will go along with the Democrats.
There’s a lot of needle-threading because of such a narrow majority but it can be done. It needs somebody who WANTS to do it.
There, you drug out the Globalist boogieman for all to applaud.
It indicates you gullibly fear a boogieman worse than the progressive real enemies of the Republic
Really? His speech on the floor contradicts your assertion. Let’s assume you are correct, so why did Gaetz move forward to vacate?
I believe its personal. Gaetz hates McCarthy for not killing the House ethics probe against him
It appeared evident even before the vote that the stopgap bill was bound to fail, as several hard-right Republicans had declared that they would not back a temporary spending bill, known as a continuing resolution, under any circumstances.
Wow, you RINOs can really make a lot of useless noise.
“as several hard-right Republicans had declared that they would not back a temporary spending bill, known as a continuing resolution, under any circumstances.”
McCarthy promised no more CRs. Then he signed off on a CR.
He was warned this would happen and he did it anyway.

They fall so hard....
The most pressing problem I see is that for the time being, there is still no chance of introducing across the board tariffs /s
