If you’re kicking yourself for missing the historic moment of a House speaker’s ouster Tuesday because you had to work or get your kids from school, relax: We watched, and all it boiled down to was hot air — sound and fury, signifying nothing except cynical nihilism and likely weeks of chaotic paralysis.
Oh, Rep. Matt Gaetz and his fellow rebels talked plenty about high principle and the crisis of the Republic, but all they were really doing was burning down the House, or at least the House Republican majority.
Professed conservative hardliner Gaetz got the chaos he wanted, ironically thanks to the unanimous support of House Democrats, who joined the tiny GOP Suicide Squad...
Dems, of course, are reveling in the dysfunctional circus — and will presumably try to spin it out for as long as possible...
No one knows what comes next: The rebels have no candidate for speaker, let alone a plan for keeping the party’s most moderate members from turning to the Democrats in desperation for a return to regular order.
Gaetz and his allies didn’t take a bold stand for anything but self-indulgent nihilism — they were mad at how things have been going, so they blew everything up.
The reality remains that the Dems control the White House and the Senate, so the Republicans in Congress are unable to get much done, let alone realize the demands knocking about in Gaetz’s wildest dreams.
This arson no doubt feels good, like you’ve at last done something — just like punching a wall.
Then your hand starts to hurt and you realize that that’s all you’ve achieved...
Also up in the air: What Republican would even want the speaker’s job, so long as it means being held hostage by Gaetz and his crew?

“The rebels have no candidate for speaker...”
There is that line again, the line that the ones using it think is so brilliant.
It is not necessary for them to have a candidate for speaker, that was not the object of their move. The object of their move was to get rid of McCarthy.
The Republicans caucus has to choose another speaker, not Gaetz. It is not his obligation to pony up a Speaker candidate before he makes his move. That would have made some RINOs stroke out.
According to the above line everyone thinks is so brilliant, if the Republican caucus can’t come up with another Speaker, they should all be primaried out of Congress.
Apprently the New York Post Editorial Board does not approve of Rep. Gaetz using the rules in order to remove the Sainted Speaker of the House.
Sorry New York Post Editorial Board, the House is the playground of House members and they make the rules. Not the self rightious and sanctmonious New York Post Editorial Board. Nor for that matter do any of us outside of the 435 near royalty members of that august body.
I say to one and all let them have their Denver Date nights, Fire alarm pulling little tanturums and the all their other Frat House partying.
It is only 13 months until election day.
Did McCarthy propose a temporary spending bill that would have cut spending and have this same 8 idiots vote down?
Dead on
Never let them forget
Although your points are well taken, there is an error
Gaetz is the Republican In Name Only
McCarthy is the true Republican
“Republicans will be portrayed as a dysfunctional bunch that can’t get organized on anything. Big Media won’t let this go, just watch.”
That is another supposedly brilliant analysis going around.
1. When has Big Media not assaulted the Republican caucus?
2. The Republicans will select another Speaker. Will they still be tarnished as not being able to get organized on anythng? However, it will probably require more than one voting session; it took about fifteen for McCarthy, so that is evidence he was not actually loved and adored by the Republicans, as he supposedly is now. More than one vote, though, and some RINOs will be screaming like it is the End.
3. The next guy to be selected now will realize that he has to be accountalble for the deals he makes. And he can’t allow himself to get rolled by Nancy Pelosi and Jefferies.
These actions just set a new precedent that the minority in the house can have power and should not be ignored. The president and the senate ignored the house minority believing there were no consequences.
This move elevated the power of the minority.
Yup, and all the news will be about Republican chaos and their inability to govern.
There would have been no shutdown if more Representatives were willing to accept reasonable measures to reduce spending. I am tired of Gaetz and the others being referred to as the “hard right”.
Good job.
Like Ryan, McCarthy was an epic failure.
Nothing, I mean nothing, of consequence positive for the United States occurred because of McCarthy’s leadership. Everything of consequence to preserving the Republic had to be torn from his clenched fists, or he held onto tightly.
Spending money on illegals, destroying the currency and the economy, all the while depriving the elderly of the social security they will need by robbing the fund for the illegals, while the illegals mule in the sex trade, pedophile trade, and drugs, is unacceptable number one. McCarthy should have stopped it. He should at least fired every gun he had so there was no doubt he tried. Instead he was a cover for Pelosi and Biden.
Don’t even start me on the debt….
Kevin McCarthy INTENTIONALLY dithered all year, to get to September 30th, so the pressure of a “shutdown” would result in a CR to November, and then “shutdown” pressure in November would lead to another CR that would take us to December, and then Christmas pressure would result in another CR that would take us to March.
Just like last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that.
He was an Establishment tool and now his power has been removed.
We want changes.
“On the other hand we’ve been shot in the foot. Gaetz sent the motion across without a plan. He’s the dog that finally caught the car he was chasing.”
Congratulations. You managed to get the main three mindless talking points together in one sentence, as if it were brilliant analysis.
I thought they were just retarded. Now, I see they’re trolls infiltrating our side.
Did McCarthy propose a temporary spending bill that would have cut spending and have these same 8 idiots vote down?
IT WAS FOR ONE-MONTH!
Ryan took the job for one reason. No one else would take the job
He crafted and passed the largest tax increase in American history. He did what he intended to do
Finding a Republican now who will take the job may again be problematic
That said, the insurrection must be accomodated
Sure, but the reality is that Repubs only controlled 1/3 of the government and even that was tenuous.
Yup, but it was trying to move things in the right direction.
